Brunch and barbecue in Austin
We are looking for a place for brunch for 10 people when we visit Austin in June. We also are looking for the best barbecue there. Any ideas? We aren't big fans of Mexican food...hope that doesn't leave us out of the box! Thanks. Ellen.
While it is Mexican, Fonda San Miguel serves up gourmet interior Mexican cuisine, unlike any Americanized Mex you might have encountered previously.
Their brunch is nothing short of spectacular, with the head chef serving up the dishes and explaining their background.
One of the finest dining experiences Austin has to offer, in a gorgeous room.
Reservations are an absolute must.
The 1500 South Congress Cafe serves an extensive brunch everyday of the week except , I think, Sunday. It is in a trendy area of shops just south of Town Lake. Call ahead for a large party.
Eastside Cafe, just east of I-35 and The University on Manor Rd (pronounced MAY-nor) has a terrific, extensive, and inexpensive weekend brunch. Call ahead for reservations, 476-5858 I think. They also have a few good Mexican selections.
I agree that you should give our Mexican a try, at Manuel's on Congress between 3rd and 4th. They have half price appetizers from 5 to 7 PM. A weekend brunch, with live music. And terrific fried shrimp for the non-mexican-food-types.
Fonda San Miguel has an expensive but truly wonderful Sunday brunch buffet. Mexican, of course.
No matter what anyone tells you, avoid Kerby Lane Cafe.
And if you do decide to try Mexican, don't try one of our Tex-Mex places. They are uniformly dreadful.
At the risk of offending you, I can't help but suggest that being from St. Louis, the possibility exists that you think you don't "like Mexican food" because in truth you've never HAD Mexican food.
Many people believe that one of the best brunches in Austin, and in fact the entire state, is at Fonda san Miguel. Again, even at the risk of offending you, I'd suggest that you might consider taking the leap and doing a little investigating into true, authentic Mexican "Mexican food." You might discover something interesting.
