Hard Hat XI

Despite that fact that they're building a new one a few miles away, Whole Foods has decided to keep the Gateway store open after all. I suspect they don't want to lose customers to the new Trader Joe's opening up in the Arboretum.

  1. this is good. Not that i'm a big WF shopper, but the domain is just a logistical PITA to get in and out of.

    1. Noticed that "Momo Korean Cuisine and Sushi" has opened up in the former Maharaja Indian place in the old shopping center at Spicewood Springs & 183. It didn't look open when I passed by to go to Asia Cafe, but it is set at an odd angle to the parking lot. Anyone been there yet?

We went Friday night. Certainly not terrible, but wife and I both agreed that you can do much better even at Osaka one exit up 183.

      2. zakia's greek cuisine at the artisan apartments on parmer closed, and a new thai place is opening up. hope it's good, because it's right around the corner from my house.

forgot to mention the name. it's "thai lada".

          1. re: dinaofdoom

Thai Lada is...interesting. Service is allll over the place. I find it a bit charming, but someone could easily lose patience with the very scattered waitresses. The panang curry I ordered tasted good, but it was missing one of the veggies listed on the menu. On a later trip, I tried the basil crispy chicken and once again it was missing some of the veggies listed. I plan to stick to the other Parmer restaurant Thai Cuisine for lunch.

Amigo's in the same shopping center seems to have met its end. It was closed on a Tuesday at noon. No signage up mentioning why it was closed, so I'm assuming they didn't pay their rent.

            1. re: verily

That's too bad, Amigo's had some really good tacos. The owner is a hoot.

        2. By now we've all probably heard that Trader Joe's Bee Cave location opened up today. But also worth mentioning is that Wheatsville South finally opened today as well. It's at South Lamar, across from the Sun Harvest turned Sprouts.

i've been to the trader joe's bee cave several times now, despite it the distance and my hatred of that part of town :-)

            1. re: dinaofdoom

have you tried that cookie butter stuff, smooth or crunchy? It's a remarkably good product especially melted over good vanilla bean ice cream.

              1. re: slowcoooked

That's stuff is already available at other places. Sprouts, Central Market and Whole Foods carries variations of the product.

                1. re: slowcoooked

slowcooked, i can't have it (gluten) but got some for a friend. also, the tubs of burrata (2 balls for $5) can't be beat! the cheese prices alone are amazing and worth the drive, for me at least.

                  1. re: dinaofdoom

They have Roquefort - the king of cheeses - for $9.95/lb. Which is ridiculously low. CM and Hole Foods charge $28-$34. Even Costco is $9.50 for 11 ounces.

I picked up soem burrata but ended up trading it in for the St Andre. Next time...

Is this the usual price? That is a great price

                      1. re: TroyTempest

they don't do sales, so i imagine it is.

i can't remember the exact pricing but the cambozola i got was about half what HEB charges (when i can even find it).

hope they can keep up with demand. when i went for my second visit, there was a bunch of stuff i wanted to stock up on, like the refrigerated packets of kim chee for $2, but they were out.

                        1. re: dinaofdoom

Therein lies my problem with Trader Joes...no guaranteed stock. They get deals, they sell the deals and then they are out, sometimes forever. If I'm going to a destination store like TJ's, I want them to have the items I've purchased before. Just not their model. I'll pass.

              2. The former Artz Rib House building seems to have been abducted by aliens. The now empty lot will supposedly be rebuilt as Abel's Rib House (possibly related to Abel's on the Lake and Cain and Abel? Same property owners)

Oh, that's good. I thought that "they" were going to tear the whole thing down and go vertical.

                  1. re: rudeboy

Oh, it's torn down for sure. I think the sign is the only thing left last I looked. But I don't think the lot is large enough for the City to require it go vertical (residential on top of retail).

It had to be torn down since any sort of remodeling would have meant it would have to be remodeled to current building codes. And It was a wreck, IMO.

He has an aggressive schedule, but he is still working on permitting for the remodel. Where Pappy's was. Please support him when he opens.......you all know about that location.

great news. hopefully when titayas reopens we have an embarrasment of riches in the hood. Mam's is a bit one dimensional in my opinion.

                        tough location indeed.

So, will he be in that strip center next to the HEB? Lastly there was a BBQ place there i believe.

                          1. re: TroyTempest

Yeah - I hope Sap can overcome the curse......Romeo's was pretty successful there until the original owners sold the business. Other than that, Pancho's was there for a long time.

                            1. re: rudeboy

Me too. I like Sap's, but don't make it down south much. The fact that Pancho's was there for a long time says something. What, I'm not exactly sure.

                        3. Dan's Hamburgers on Manchaca and Ben White is gone. Poof! Just like Artz - It was there one day and gone the next.

A blurb on austin360 says they are closing for 8 weeks for "remodeling" and hope to reopen by Thanksgiving. I think they meant "rebuild", not "remodel".

In other news Nanking restaurant had a big fire last night. Southside Pizza had a smaller one (just caught those two blurbs on the news as I was writing this).

                          1. Just noticed that My Fit Foods is opening next to the HEB at 2222 and Burnet....for those of you trying to maximize your $ per calorie.

I was hoping that the former Blockbusters space would become "more HEB" or a specialty charcuterie/cheese place. Or a seafood market. But I'm sure that wouldn't sit well with HEB.

does heb own the whole development? i think i remember they do. i wonder if they recently invested in my fit foods- seems like every new heb has a my fit foods counter now. maybe this is in lieu of that since there wouldn't be room at that crappy heb.

                              1. re: ieathereforeiam

The original deal worked out with HEB in 2011 was for four in-store kiosks and a standalone store in an HEB-owned shopping center.

I'm pretty sure HEB owns most of the shopping centers in which they reside. I think one exception is William Cannon and First St.

Yeah, I don't know - maybe they do, and they probably don't see My Fit Foods as a threat. For example, if you eat My FIt Foods a lot, you'd need to stop in HEB to get ice cream and potato chips on the same trip!

                                2. re: rudeboy

they put in a my fit foods after the remodel at parker/mcneil, which was a total bummer because they got rid of the hot and prepared food case.

the new lakeline location has a cafe concept (kind of like the hot and cold stuff at whole foods, but HEB-ized) and no MFF. perhaps they are alternating concepts.

our office had some complimentary my fit foods for a health-oriented seminar. it was AWFUL. salty and mealy yet flavorless despite the sodium.

there are a few people in the office who buy all their meals from them, and i marvel at how much they're paying for a plastic container filled with a piece of cheese and a hard boiled egg (that's just one example).

                                  1. re: dinaofdoom

Yeah - we had the same office seminar. I went in and got the plug because I didn't have a lunch that day. They are big on parboiled rice....I thought that parboiled rice was just rice that was partially cooked, but it is much more than that. It has almost the same nutritional value as brown rice but it tastes better than brown rice (for some reason, I cannot stand brown rice). So, I just started using parboiled at home.

I've been to that HEB and noticed the change in that aisle.

On my way to Hobby Lobby to pick up a Jesus fish eating a Darwin fish for my Prius, I noticed that a new place is opening on the N side of Anderson....where that store was that sold those great tamales with the fat masa. It says "Tortillaria and Taqueria." I think where Gault intersects Anderson. Maybe we will get lucky and have some good corn tortillas produced.

also tried baked by amy today. the inside is slick and modern looking. very young snotty hipster girls staffing the counter (this coming from a girl with piercings, tattoos and magenta hair). the cupcakes looked exquisite. tried a vanilla and pistachio macarons after getting a lecture on how nothing is truly "gluten free". at $2 a piece, they were very crispy and had a lovely texture. too sweet for my taste, but maybe that's how it got such crispness? there is a fair amount of ground nuts in the cookies so the extra ground nuts in the filling were kinda superfluous. the ones at the office are better and are cheaper (yes, i'm spoiled!).

                                                                                                  1. re: dinaofdoom

The draw for me is that I can walk there with my daughter, have a beer, and watch her play. I don't like how they force one to have a burger AND fries. I like the choice of including fries or not (I'm weird - I like to either have only a burger or only fries).

You have to build your own burger with three ingredients for a certain price. I have liked chili, onions, and cheddar on a veggie patty, and blue cheese, mushrooms, and sauteed onions on a beef patty. Haven't had any of their chicken sandwiches or the fish sandwich. The foot long and the corn dog are both insanely salty. Not sure where they are sourcing those dogs, but they are horrible.

                                                                                                      1. re: TroyTempest

The burgers are only ok, but the draw is the great playscape for the kids. And you can get a burger without the fries. Just tell them no fries and they will knock a dollar off the price.

                                                                                                        1. re: Sweet_Cheeks

Seating was limited, though. Maybe a a pie shop will do very well there, since it is mainly a pick up thing. Let's wish them luck!

I remember reading about this, but the original story from 2012 made it sound like an addition or remodel, so I was also surprised to see it leveled.

I really like Shu Shu's Singapore noodles. Not as much curry as some others, but you can request it to be curried up. They do get the "char" off of their woks that you can taste in the food. Much less "saucy" than Suzi's. When I went to Suzi's, I'd ask them to cut down on the sauce. But I'm looking forward to their new place.

Word on the street (the street here being The Statesman) is that there will soon be a Kerbey Lane on Braker Lane (http://www.austin360.com/weblogs/the-...). I imagine it'll thin the weekend brunch crowd at Cafe Java a touch.

The meat was underseasoned and a little too gristly, even for ribeye. Space is nice though and I could see the patio being fun in the spring or fall. I'll wait to hear others' reviews before I go back, since it's pretty pricey. Let's start a new thread!

Second time, tried Sunday brunch and were completely put off by the huge line. Third time we went, happy hour, not as impressed with the food.

Of course, it's practically walking distance, so I'm sure we'll give it a couple more goes.

Haven't tried the brunch yet, though, and a huge line would put me off, too. My faves there are the trout salad, the Navaho taco, the fried catfish app, and of course the chicken fried pork chop. Dang, that thing is good.

Does Chen still have an ownership stake in the place? Did it just change names only? I've been since the name change. Not much changed. I like the place.

They haven't had the pizza dough in 2(?) years and I can't justify a trip just for candy. Although if there were a store near my neighborhood, I'd probably go occasionally.

Marie's used to have a really good Roquefort as well, but I haven't seen it since I left California 14 years ago. Marie's [Superchunk] Blue tastes bitter to me and a couple other people I know.

I think it was in an orange lidded jar. From the website, it doesn't look like they make it anymore

The thousand island dressing on their burgers was pretty legit, from what I remember. I wonder if they ever bottled that?

But I can't find a site that describes them all. They only advertise tarter sauce on their site.

I don't see Sprouts on their retailer list, and no Texas - only West coast retailer. Only Sunflower/Newflower here used to carry them.

It's the original Lockhart guy's grandsons.

However, Black's in Lockhart has decided to take over the old Aussie Pies location on Guadalupe and open up an Austin branch there. They will not be actually BBQing in Austin, but trucking in brisket from Lockhart and reheating it to serve here.

Original Lockhart location was in business 1,000 year sand just now wants to come to Austin.

There is a DQ about half a block west of the intersection near Cedar Park.

It's here http://goo.gl/maps/1w7Ze about where it says "Dream Dinners". Next time I will locate it using more Chowhound-ish places like Stuffed and Noble Sandwich Co. instead of DQ and Subway. :-)

So I went to Polvo's north location off of Bratton Ln. for lunch today and I saw that the brick & mortar version of Garbo's (Lobster Truck) looks ready to open. It's in the same spot where Gumbo's originally was and that was later Yoli's Place and then who knows what. Here is a map because I have learned my lesson. :-)

I spotted a new Burmese Grocery Store at St. John's and Lamar (NE Corner in the gray building with Boost Mobile). I'm not sure what they have as far as prepared food/restaurant goes, but I'm hoping to stop in this weekend and see what it's all about. It'd be great to have some Burmese food in town.

                                                                                                                                                                                              2. got on the guest list for the soft opening of slab bbq on 183, in the same plaza as sherlock's. they already have a food truck so had their act together for a first try:

                                                                                                                                                                                                http://www.realdopebbq.com

it's a good location: easy to get to, lotsa parking, bunch of stores in the area so you can do errands before or after.

one thing i haven't seen elsewhere: white sauce. been hearing more about it in food blogs, and this was some tasty stuff, with a bit of a kick.

for the soft opening, they did a smattering of the menu.
tried the following, without any of the delectable-looking buns:
                                                                                                                                                                                                1. texas o.g.: brisket topped with pickles and onions.
--it was a good balance of fatty and moist.
                                                                                                                                                                                                2. texas two-step: chicken topped with Smokey Denmark’s sausage.
--the chicken was really moist, and we all know SDs are good.
                                                                                                                                                                                                3. ribs with some kind of fruit and habanero glaze.
--they were not hot, but they were darn tasty.

they also had a small bar area and were giving out dublin sodas in bottles, plus some bottled beer and crispin's cider. couldn't tell if they had a tap or not because the bar was a bit crowded, and i was stuffing my face.

great people. very cool that they opened the place up for the community to try first. really hoping they do well. i'll be back.

Walking distance from work, too. I guess that terrible Luby's-style bbq joint two doors down is doomed...

I've seen a new deli or something going in the strip at Braker and N. Lamar, a couple of doors to the left of Pho Dan.

I keep forgetting to really check out the name, since I'm usually rushing back to work and fighting a pho coma when I'm driving away.

Not quite a new business but there was a couple selling brisket at the Barton Creek Farmer's market. They had Waygu brisket. It was pretty good and worth the effort if in the area on a Saturday morining

Also went to Punch Bowl Social's opening party last night. It appears they actually prepared the food served. The wings were decent and their deserts were pretty good, cupcakes and cheesecake. If you go for drinks I recommend the backyard burbon. Place has bowling, darts, shuffleboard and some retro games. I'm sure it will be very popular. It's at the domain next to Gloria's.
