Hard Hat XI

Despite that fact that they're building a new one a few miles away, Whole Foods has decided to keep the Gateway store open after all. I suspect they don't want to lose customers to the new Trader Joe's opening up in the Arboretum.

  1. this is good. Not that i'm a big WF shopper, but the domain is just a logistical PITA to get in and out of.

    1. Noticed that "Momo Korean Cuisine and Sushi" has opened up in the former Maharaja Indian place in the old shopping center at Spicewood Springs & 183. It didn't look open when I passed by to go to Asia Cafe, but it is set at an odd angle to the parking lot. Anyone been there yet?

We went Friday night. Certainly not terrible, but wife and I both agreed that you can do much better even at Osaka one exit up 183.

      2. zakia's greek cuisine at the artisan apartments on parmer closed, and a new thai place is opening up. hope it's good, because it's right around the corner from my house.

forgot to mention the name. it's "thai lada".

          1. re: dinaofdoom

Thai Lada is...interesting. Service is allll over the place. I find it a bit charming, but someone could easily lose patience with the very scattered waitresses. The panang curry I ordered tasted good, but it was missing one of the veggies listed on the menu. On a later trip, I tried the basil crispy chicken and once again it was missing some of the veggies listed. I plan to stick to the other Parmer restaurant Thai Cuisine for lunch.

Amigo's in the same shopping center seems to have met its end. It was closed on a Tuesday at noon. No signage up mentioning why it was closed, so I'm assuming they didn't pay their rent.

            1. re: verily

That's too bad, Amigo's had some really good tacos. The owner is a hoot.

        2. By now we've all probably heard that Trader Joe's Bee Cave location opened up today. But also worth mentioning is that Wheatsville South finally opened today as well. It's at South Lamar, across from the Sun Harvest turned Sprouts.

i've been to the trader joe's bee cave several times now, despite it the distance and my hatred of that part of town :-)

have you tried that cookie butter stuff, smooth or crunchy? It's a remarkably good product especially melted over good vanilla bean ice cream.

              1. re: slowcoooked

That's stuff is already available at other places. Sprouts, Central Market and Whole Foods carries variations of the product.

                1. re: slowcoooked

slowcooked, i can't have it (gluten) but got some for a friend. also, the tubs of burrata (2 balls for $5) can't be beat! the cheese prices alone are amazing and worth the drive, for me at least.

                  1. re: dinaofdoom

They have Roquefort - the king of cheeses - for $9.95/lb. Which is ridiculously low. CM and Hole Foods charge $28-$34. Even Costco is $9.50 for 11 ounces.

I picked up soem burrata but ended up trading it in for the St Andre. Next time...

Is this the usual price? That is a great price

                      1. re: TroyTempest

they don't do sales, so i imagine it is.

i can't remember the exact pricing but the cambozola i got was about half what HEB charges (when i can even find it).

hope they can keep up with demand. when i went for my second visit, there was a bunch of stuff i wanted to stock up on, like the refrigerated packets of kim chee for $2, but they were out.

                        1. re: dinaofdoom

Therein lies my problem with Trader Joes...no guaranteed stock. They get deals, they sell the deals and then they are out, sometimes forever. If I'm going to a destination store like TJ's, I want them to have the items I've purchased before. Just not their model. I'll pass.

Yes! I went to buy a Turkey for Xmas. They said no turkeys, for Xmas we are doing hams. Well, my kids wanted a turkey. Aaargh!

            2. construction has begun in earnest over at titayas. hopefully not too long now.
