Old School House in Hudson -- terrific Portuguese

Boston_Otter Aug 19, 2013 06:24 AM

My friends and I were looking for food in Hudson and accidentally found the Old School House & gave it a shot, and wow, I'm glad we did.

We were sort of taken aback by the entree prices (in the $18-$25 range) which was a bit much for lunch, until we found the hilariously titled "Snacks" section with their house special, the "Porto Style Sandwich". This thing is a monster. Three layers of meat -- ham, a pork loin, and chorizo links -- between toast and cheese, with tons of cheese melted on top and crowned with a fried egg, the whole thing served in a cauldron of port wine tomato sauce. For $10 it's the biggest and best sandwich I've had in memory. Calling it a sandwich is sort of a joke-- they serve it with a steak knife, and it's impossible to eat with your hands. When the server saw we'd finished them, she actually gasped and said "You... ATE IT?!". I guess most people give up after half of that thing.

Our appetizers, which we absolutely didn't need, were also excellent: a grilled shrimp skewer and some of the best grilled whole chicken wings I've had -- no sauce, just a great herb rub and a terrific char. Top notch Caipirinhas too. I'm definitely looking forward to trying some of their seafood in the future.

Boston_Otter BTW you have made the first CH report of a "Francesinha" sandwich in the area. Its more commonly made with beef and beer in the sauce, but pork loin and vinho do Porto are variants. They also have lapas on the menu -- great photo of these on the contact us page, which Nab was looking for another version of (and Dave MP expressed some interest). If you combine that with frango de churrasco grilled in the flat baskets which they have as a lunch special, bacalhau ze de pipo, and a couple of things na telha I would be close behind StriperGuy jumping in the car but am about to go overseas.

Note that the $19-25 plates are likely to be sized to feed two, in many cases to with leftovers, but you did polish off the francesinha....

I would add to my post that their terrific whole grilled chicken wings are .75 each, which is crazy cheap for what you get.

Also, here's a photo of the Porto Style Sandwich, with a large man's hand in the background for reference.
