Destingo's: Anyone been yet?

A new Italian bistro just opened on Queen St. Has anyone been yet? And if so, how is it?

  1. I went for brunch. It was OK. Lovely patio, no wait, but service was pretty inconsistent --either hovering or totally absent.

And the food was alright, but nothing to write home about. I like that they have lots of healthy options, but it's a little bland, and the portions are teeny.

Thanks for the 411 about portion sizes. I'm planning on going for lunch in a couple weeks, so I'll report back once I do.

BTW, what did you have for brunch?

      1. re: kwass

My first visit was for lunch and we sat outside. Shrimp burger was great! A few other tables, service was fine.

Second visit this past weekend was brunch and I had the Shrimp Burger again. It was excellent. Place was quite busy. The service was terrible. And not just terrible because of slow or absent, but because of just not caring that it was slow and absent. Had they at least shown/said that they were trying, I would have no reason to mention it here.

        1. re: justsayn

Sorry to hear about the service justsayn.

What about portion sizes? Have you found them to be small ?

          1. re: kwass

As far as the shrimp burger is concerned, I felt the quality and portion was excellent.

            1. re: justsayn

Well that's good to hear! Maybe it depends on what you order.

        2. re: kwass

I had the frittata. That was a decent portion, but it came with fruit salad that turned out to be about a dozen blueberries on the side. I also got a side of cottage cheese and it was probably a quarter cup. So maybe it's just the side dishes that are wee.

          1. re: piccola

Maybe you need a 2nd visit to know for sure :)

            1. re: kwass

I might try it for dinner but not sure I'll go back for brunch, to be honest. There are other places I'd rather go to.

      2. We went fri night
Had the Carne pizza very good , love thin crust (less carbs)
The veal was cooked just right and nice portion
One of us had the pasta special and the rigatoni was under cooked (they were very busy) , so they took it back and made another and sent us dessert for the table on the house
They may be going through some growing pains training staff but we enjoyed our meal and will return

Thanks for the review. How was the dessert?

          1. re: justsayn

Pistachio ice cream made in house amazing
            Terramisou cake excellent
            pannecata not to our liking

        2. I had way too high hopes for this place.
Went for dinner at 10pm, service was incredibly lacking, was sitting around half the time with empty glasses of water, or waiting for the waiter to return to take our order, clear our plates, take our money. Half the time I just ended up flagging a waiter down.

          Had the...

          Quattro Funghi Pizza
The crust was very tough, and tasted like cardboard. I just ended up eating just the toppings.

Agnolotti alla Sasha (spinach and ricotta, rose sauce)
This was pretty good, no complaints there. I'd like to try and come back and try some other pastas.

Side of pan seared artichoke hearts with balsamic reduction
This was pretty good, a little too much lemon juice though

          Panna Cotta
Was not scooped out properly so there were bits and pieces of it plopped on top. It had separated and the plating was really pathetic. On top of that, it was more like whipped cream, both textually and flavour wise.

          Pimms Cup
          No complaints here.

Overall I'd say my biggest complaint was the poor service. They did not even ask us what was wrong when we barely touched certain items.

Well I hate to say it, but I volunteered the information as to our wanting coffee and H2O several times and they really couldn't care less, let alone be as proactive as you've pointed out, and how one would hope they would be! Amateur hour mixed with indifference. Bad combo!

          2. My now-husband and I live just around the corner from Destingo and make and effort to support local establishments. We decided to host our pre-wedding dinner at Destingo as they were amenable to our group of 25+ on a Friday night (5pm redo) and the patio as previously mentioned was indeed a gorgeous locale.

My main issue was in service. We had given AMPLE notice of our reservation and despite knowing about our large party, there was inadequate service both in quantity and quality. Our single drinks server spilled a beer on my father in law within the first few minutes (as he was seated at the table), and were simply inequipped to handle the numbers.

Once our party was seated, our orders were taken promptly and appetizers came out within a reasonable amount of time. My caprese salad was a disappointment as given the August time frame, our tomatoes were bland and anemic. The Destingo salad was a better choice with a brighter dressing. overall, average.

What completely lost my interest in returning was that our table's mains did not arrive until the other 2 table's mains were served, eaten AND cleared. Guests had requested their bills before I even ate my dinner!! As for the food, my veal was tasty but my partners gnocchi was again a bland, creamy, mooshy mess.

If this had not been our pre-wedding dinner with more important things on my mind, I would have complained in person. As it stands, I have yet to go and formally complain regarding the service but mark my words, I will.

            1. re: Hausmanis

              That sounds horrible!

The more I hear about peoples' experiences, the less inclined I am to check it out.

              1. re: Hausmanis

Sorry to hear. I am glad that you are going to make them aware as I am quite certain they have no clue how pathetic their service is and thus how badly their attitude comes across.

                1. re: Hausmanis

Just wondering if you visited or wrote to them yet?

Beast was closed today (another story) so we decided to give this place a third try. The patio was just so inviting it seemed worth the risk. I can get over indifferent service if everything else is working for me.

The ricotta pancakes came with a very good lemon curd sauce. The waiter was astute enough to notice I stopped eating my pancakes not quite half way through and was nice enough to ask if I wanted more sauce. I told her the problem was not the lack of sauce but rather that much of the pancakes were not cooked right. I showed her there was clumps of flour that just tasted like raw flour and uncooked batter. To that she said oh thanks for telling me and walked away leaving me with the picked over mush. When she returned later to clear plates she asked if I was done to which I responded well yes I can't eat this it's raw. To that she promised me she would tell the chef because they like to get feedback. No apologies, no offers to make good on it, no offer to bring something else, just nothing. And yes of course it appeared on our bill.

The message is now clear. Please don't bother us with your silly expectations!

I was with my dad... his napkin blew off the table. Another waiter noticed and picked it up and threw it away. Do you think he brought us a replacement? Correct!

                  1. re: justsayn

Wow! The stories just get worse and worse! If I were you justsayn, I'd call and ask to speak to the manager or better yet, the owner.

                    1. re: kwass

I hear ya. I feel like this. It's a brand new place. If management/ownership wants feedback, they can work the restaurant. I really don't care enough to reach out beyond CH, should they not be lucky/aware enough to read this thread.

                      1. re: justsayn

And I hear you!! If it were me, I'd probably just be so angry/upset that I'd have to say something.

It just seems like a shame that a brand new restaurant, with (what seems like) potential, is going to fail because of their abhorrent service.

                        1. re: kwass

I know. I guess I feel they've had enough of my energy... and money. I will let you represent me though. :-)

                          1. re: justsayn

I'd love to represent you and everyone who's had a similar experience there, but I haven't been yet, so my voice might not hold weight. That being said, I understand your resignation to do nothing and just not return.

You've actually been more than fair, giving them 3 chances (I think). You've been far more gracious and generous than most would be.

On the other hand, if I were to play devil's advocate, the only way they can improve, is if they (meaning management/ownership) are made aware of people's displeasure.

And since we're on the topic of brunch, although unrelated to Destingo, have you seen the brunch menu @ Delux? That french toast is calling my name :)

                            1. re: kwass

Yes three visits but the first was fine.

It's my belief that this issue, for this particular restaurant, is representative of the owner(s). There is nothing for me to do here. Their service problems are intrinsic.

Been to Delux twice. Great place. Haven't tried the french toast yet. Please keep us posted!

                              1. re: justsayn

From everything youve said, you're probably right. I wouldn't be surprised if the problems do, in fact, trickle down from the owners themselves, as they set the standard.

As for Delux, I absolutely will keep you posted. As of now, I'm planning on going next weekend :) Check the new Delux thread. That's where I'll post.
