Hello everyone,

I'm going to Berlin for a few days and I am looking for a great konditorei where I can get good pastries and coffee. Any suggestions? thanks for all your help!

Hey--thanks so much for the advice. We're actually in Berlin now. We tried to go to the opernpalais yesterday, but much to our disappointment, it's closed for renovation at the moment. and we didn't quite make it over to Prenzlauer Berg to try the other place you recommend.

However, we did have coffee and cake at five elephant in kreuzberg. The vibe was less konditerei and more trendy coffee shop, but the coffee was excellent slow filter coffee that the employees talked about like people talk about wine, and the blueberry crumble cake was too die for. it was the right amount of fruity and buttery, and definitely hit the spot. Apparently the cheesecake is also great, but I didn't try it.

      Thanks again for your suggestions.

Aw, whatta bummer about the Opernpalais! Their cake selection is a view to behold.

But happy to hear you found a good alternative!

How's Cafe Einstein these days? I was there and had memorable evenings with my friends in the 80s. Sigh....

You mean the original on Kurfürstenstr.? Still pretty damn good gedeckter Apfelkuchen mit Schlag, and great coffee.

So far I haven't made it to the upstairs bar, Zimtstern. Was that around in the 80s?

It's been so long that all I recall is being in a large room with many windows looking out, great professional waiters, and a wonderful crowd. The desserts and coffee were awesome. We were evening clients rather than breakfast.

It's almost certain that I mean the original, because we were not aware of another place. I looked just now, and Tripadvisor indicates that there is a Friedrichstrasse location that seems to be in (or near) what was then East Berlin.

Yes, there's one on Unter den Linden, too -- both in the former East.

I'm not a big cake/pastry person, but the coffee is still one of the best in town.
