Le Chien Fumant or 400 Coups???

petek Aug 17, 2013 07:00 PM

I'll be in Montreal in September(5th-8th) and I have a reservation for 400 Coups, but since the news of the mass exodus of the founding members,I'm having reservations about my reservation...
Please help me decide.

These places are very different in many ways. For casual, heavy, hipster French, Chien Fumant is always great. If you're looking for something a bit more upscale, 400 Coups is exceptional without feeling pretentious. Really I think either is a good choice.
In all honesty I wouldn't let the change in staff at 400 Coups scare you off - the people who are purportedly taking over have been working under the departing three for some time, and have likely already been doing much of the actual cooking. I can't imagine that the quality is going to suddenly drop off notably.

      Thanks for the reply!
I'm sure you're right about 400 Coups, but after reading about Chien Fumant,it's really piqued my interest.
I forgot to mention that I have reservations for Joe Beef as well(Coups or Chien on the Thursday and Beef on Saturday) which leaves Friday open...I'm thinking 3 reservations in a row might be too much..convince me otherwise :)

Chien Fumant is former Joe Beef people, so there is some similarity. In that case, you're better off with 400 Coups. Although Chien Fumant is good...
And if you don't have a reservation for a Friday night, you might find it a bit difficult to get in to someplace popular, as they tend to be smaller and busy. So unless you want something really casual, which doesn't require reservations, you are probably better off choosing a place for Friday night as well.

I think I'll be keeping my reservation 400 coups, sounds too good to pass up.
As a solo diner would anyone recommend the 5 tasting menu or should I go a la carte?

The tasting at 400 is great but, while the individual elements aren't overwhelming, by the end of the tasting. you've eaten a lot of food. So it depends on your appetite and whether you feel you need to eat everything on the plates. The a la carte menu is excellent, too, so you won't lose out on a great experience by choosing that direction either.

It's an 8:30 reservation so I'll probably be starved by then.
