Kuala Lumpur - Levain Boulangerie & Patisserie: Over-rated?

  • 0

The insanely popular Levain has a couple of things going for it: it's *not* part of one of those tiresome bakery chains which seemed to dominate Kuala Lumpur's baked goods scene, and it's esconced in a beautiful high-ceilinged bungalow in a posh neighborhood, giving it a hard-to-match classy image. 7.30am on a Saturday morning, and Levain's packed with customers and diners, its parking area overflowing with vehicles.

Other than that, I'm struggling a bit to put my finger on *what* makes Levain so much talked-about in KL: its pastries and bread were similar in taste and texture to those from *any* other bakery in KL, and its use of "halal" turkey "ham" takes away a lot of authenticity and sweetness I associate with the real stuff.

Some of the baked stuff we tried this morning:
- Turkey ham & egg bun: nothing outstanding about this: the bread was soft & mushy, Japanese-style, and the topping tasted like something one can rustle up at home in 5 minutes.
- Almond croissant: over-baked and dry-ish, saved perhaps by the almond paste in the middle. But the paste was sweetish, with a sloppy texture.
- Plain croissant: flaky but not as rich texture-wise, or tasty as I'd imagined it should be.
