Wow!! An even 'tastier' plum than the Red Velvet Apricot!!

Charles Yu Aug 16, 2013 06:48 PM

'Purple Rose Plum' from California:
This is, in my opinion, one of the most delicious and aromatic plum I have ever eaten! Velvety skin, extraordinarily juicy, super sweet and an aroma and taste profile that encompass a unique combination of Rose flower floral bouquet plus 'late harvest Gewurztraminer wine' nose and palette. A steal at Can$2.99 per lb from Michael Angelo!!
Unsure how long the season for this will last?

I have to agree that the purple rose plum is quite lovely. I've been eating them all this week!

If you love plum Charles, you should have tried the mango plums at Michael Angelo nearly a month ago. It's a heart shaped golden plum bordering on ataulfo mango shade. It's a lovely floral aroma with a honey and mango flavour instead of just 'sweet' sugary. Unlike most plums, the skin is not acidic sour flavour but it is softer tart that compliments the mango flavour.

      Thank you Nevy!!

Missed that!! I have to mark it down on my diary for next year!!!

Found Michael Angelo to be quite a store for interesting fruits! Pretty reasonable price too!! Bought some Ontario Wild Blue Berries that's at least a dollar or two less than Longo's across the road!

I assuming you're going to the larger GTA east one. The GTA west one is much smaller but they do carry lots of great fruits. They had fresh yellow Israeli dates there and I picked up a few. If you love dried fruits, I suggest trying the Mozafati dates. They're a revelation for me. Soft and creamy texture combined with caramel flavours ... And only $3.99 for a box at 700 g. I highly prefer these over the gummy sugary medjool dried out dates. If you grab a box, make sure they have a bit of moisture on the surface.

Charles, are the red velvet apricots similar to the Aprimum? I saw a whole case 3lb for $6.99 at Costco. I'm wondering if its the same but marketing is trying to make it sound new and exciting.

Well Costco is selling Red velvet apricots now! I bought a case and trying it tonight!

I just went and bought myself a box of Aprimum from Costco. After taste testing, my conclusion is that this 'new' product fell way short of their sweeter, juicier and less acidic skin brethren - the Black Velvet Apricot.
As for comparing it to the Purple Rose Plum, the difference is simply night and Day!! The Purple Rose is much more aromatic, juicy and delicious.

Is there anywhere other than Michael Angelo's that's selling them?

Likely a bit early in the season, I know, but has anyone seen or know where there will be Damson plums?
