Helen’s Bar-B-Q in Brownsville TN

Melanie Wong Aug 15, 2013 03:02 PM

Reading about Helen Turner, owner of Helen's Bar-B-Q in Brownsville, crowned this year's top pitmaster by Southern Foodways Alliance, naturally I looked for opinions here. I only found a mention by "cherylmtl" but no first-mouth reports.

A great place! Not only wonderful BBQ, but wonderful people too! The last time I was there, her husband and a friend were hanging around. We got to discussing BBQ, and the merits of various types. I was eating a pulled pork sandwich and he offered to give me a sliced pork sandwich on the house to see if I liked it! I was too full from what I was already eating- in fact I wasn't really hungry when I stopped there, but it was going to take an hour to get back to the hotel in Memphis so I just kind of stopped in on a whim, but it was an awfully nice gesture!

I've been there 3 or 4 times and did enjoy it. It's different from the chopped Memphis-style bbq that I'm used to, seems smokier and more savory somehow, very good. Friendly staff and other diners all seem happy to be there, too. Great place!
