Dim Sum Brunch at Dragon Palace, Charleston, SC

  • 0

As with its BBQ restaurants, Charleston has plenty of Chinese restaurants but few rise above the level of fair. After the closure of the late, lamented Palais de Jade, Dragon Palace on Daniel Island serves the best Chinese food in the area for my money. They pretty much cemented my opinion when they started doing authentic Peking Duck dinners on a semi-regular basis.

As of the first weekend in August, Dragon Palace began doing dim sum brunches on Saturdays. I went last weekend, and I was impressed. They are offering over 30 dim sum dishes. You order by marking up a little paper menu. Everything we tried was good, but the highlights for me were probably the congee (possibly the best I've had), sticky rice in lotus leaf, custard bun, and custard tart. Also, the little juicy pork buns and sesame balls were great as always (they have these on their regular menu, too) as was the eight treasures tea we drank.

More exotic fare that we didn't try, but no doubt will in the future, included chicken feet, beef tripe, tofu skin wrap, and curry fish tofu. Prices range from $2.50 to $3.50 per item, and most items include two to three pieces.

It's great to have a Chinese restaurant in Charleston serving delicious and authentic dim sum. It doesn't hurt that you get to enjoy it in Dragon Palace's beautiful atmosphere (the interior of the restaurant was constructed in Taiwan, then shipped here). I hope enough people take advantage of this offering to keep it going.
