Where should I buy black cardamom?

I live in Seattle. I haven't been happy with the black cardamom I bought at World Spice (a store that I ordinarily LOVE). Where would you, o other users of black cardamom, recommend I buy it?

  1. An Indian or Fijian store should have it. Penzeys, a spice house online sells it too.

    1. Big John's PFI
      The Souk

      1. Worldspice on Western just below Pike Place Market. Worth a trip though available though their website. Best spices and herbs in Seattle!

Melissa said she isn't impressed with the cardamom she bought at World Spice although she normally loves the store!

I wonder whether the problem was with the store or the spice itself. I've only bought black cardamom once, and use it rarely. It has a smoky taste that is quite different from the green/white.

Melissa - what other experience have you had with black cardamom? What was wrong with the Worldspice purchase?

I agree paulj. Was it old? Just an off lot?

It was a bit stale and dried out. Actually, this discussion has prompted me to call them. I'll tell you how it goes.

          2. Penzey's has them at 117 Pine or online order. Or you can go to an Indian grocery. I haven't bought black cardamom in a while, so am not sure which stores carry it, but you could try the Souk (Pike Place Market or Pinehurt), Mayuri (2560 152nd Ave NE in Redmond), which is probably the best stocked Indian grocer around here, or there's a little Indian grocer on the Ave, a few blocks south of Ravenna Blvd.

            1. World Spice is my go-to, and it is worth calling them as they are more or less the specialists (PFI has bulk spices but I'm willing to pay the modest retail premium for World Spice as they usually have fresher product.)

That said, Mayuri Grocery (not the restaurant, though it's the same folks) may be interesting and worth a visit. They definitely had black cardamom last time I was there.
