I can't post with pictures

Breadcrumbs Aug 7, 2013 05:37 AM

Recently I'd been noticing it was taking a very long time to post photos and I was still experiencing the previously reported issue of the screen getting hung up then getting the "Duplicate Post" msg. When that happened I'd have to close that tab and open up CH in a new tab.

Today I can't add photos to my post. The screen just hangs up (spinning wheel thing just keeps spinning).

I've been trying to add multiple photos so I'll try to add just one here to see if that makes a difference.

I'm using a macbook with Safari.

It may be that your photos are posting just fine, but the action isn't completing on-screen for some reason. If after a few minutes your upload hasn't completed/you're still seeing the spinning wheel, open the same thread in a new tab or window--it's likely you'll see your new post and photos there.

Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention!

Nope, not likely. The new post will appear a bit before the duplicate post error message comes up, but it takes a long time to show up as well. Since I know this behavior, I've opened a new tab several times and clicked obsessively for many minutes before the new post shows up.

The other thing I've noticed is that even when the new post appears on the message board index, it will not open until the duplicate post error message appears AND I've clicked on the button to clear it.

New behavior: Trying to start a new post with photos, two duplicate posts were created.

The post was up and available for viewing much quicker and the photos did upload successfully. There was no duplicate post error message. Ironically, whenever that error message appeared in the past, there were no duplicates. Now it made two duplicates and didn't generate an error message.

In case it helps you track this down, here's what I was doing while I waited for the post and photos to upload. 1) I opened up my profile in another tab, and the new post was already listed on the index. I clicked on it and it would not open. 2) I opened up my profile in yet another tab, and selected "posts" to see if I could view it that way. It clicked on it two or three times and then the post text did come up.

Thanks for your input Melanie, we're continuing to look into this.

That's definitely not the case Deborah. I have been opening a new tab and refreshing so I can be certain my post is eventually posted ever since the "Duplicate Post" issue arose. There has always been a delay but over the past week the situation has become infinitely worse.

In my experience the "Duplicate Post" msg appears very shortly after the posting. So, in my new tab where I'm in my Profile view and I repeatedly hit refresh, I'll see the post and shortly thereafter, the DP msg appears. Per my earlier note up-thread, on Wednesday even that process was protracted and the DP msg appeared a full 2 minutes after the post went up.

Hm, we're not able to entirely duplicate this stuff on our end, either in Firefox or Safari, but we are aware that issues with photo upload exist, so we're investigating. Thank you for all the details! (Melanie too!)

Tonight was by far my worst experience yet. I was attempting to add a post with 2 photos to a COTM thread. During the 20 minutes I was waiting for the post to load I wasn't able to access Chowhound. When I tried to load the site in a new tab it was hanging up. Other websites performed normally. Finally I got fed up and closed the tab with my post. I was able to load Chowhound immediately in a new tab.

I re-tried posting. It took 9 minutes this time. I did not receive a duplicate post msg this time.

I can't tell you how frustrating this is. I hope you are able to find a solution soon.

Same problem over here. I'm tyring to post a set of 14 photos, but they're only ~250KB each, or about 3.5MB total, which is tiny. I noticed that the status bar flashes upload percentages and it hits 100% very quickly -- within a few seconds. Watching a network monitor confirms this, I can see it spike and then flatten. So it's not my uplink. But then the wheel spins and spins and nothing happens, so I gather it's stuck processing on the site backend.

Thank you for those details, that's extremely helpful. Does anyone have a rough idea of how recently this slowdown began? The photo system hasn't been altered in quite some time, so any additional information would be very helpful in identifying possible causes.

This started happening last weekend. Prior to that, it would take a few minutes (and the second tab trick would work), but now it spins for much longer. After reading Melanie's post about it taking 44 minutes, I let mine spin for an hour, but no luck.

And thanks for looking into this!

Update: It seems I can post, it just takes for-eh-ver!

It took 11 minutes for my post below to finally post:

The "Duplicate Post" msg appeared after 13 minutes.

Call this a silly question, but how large were each of those image files? This looks like a lot of very high-quality photos, and depending on their size the time it takes for your computer to upload them- and for us to process them once that's done- likely accounts for a lot of the delay.

I'd say on average about 1.5MB / photo. I went back to look and see if the size has varied or increased since I joined CH and it's been fairly consistent however this protracted upload process is very new. I'm not noticing any other delayed functionality with my macbook and I'm having no difficulty uploading photos elsewhere at this time. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

That rules out a few possibilities. Thank you for the report, and our apologies for the slow going.

I have you beat. One recent set of photo uploads took 44 minutes. I stepped away from my computer, took a shower, and dried my hair by the time it completed.

Oh my Melanie! That's not good at all. Let's hope this gets sorted out soon.

At this point, I couldn't swear to it, but I'm pretty sure the post in question was this one with 11 photos.
                  http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/911400

I remembered "44" because the pronunciation of the Cantonese word for four sounds the same as death. This was double death.

So, this long delay may be tied to the number of photos uploaded. I've not seen it when I post just one or two.
