Solo Birthday Dinner in or Near Century City

o
OCSteve Aug 6, 2013 11:09 PM

I will be in Century City on my birthday next week and want to treat myself to dinner. I will be dining solo, so bar seating would be preferable, but it's not an absolute must. I'm open to just about any type of cuisine, and money is not a huge concern. Casual preferred. Thanks in advance.

Lots of options in Century City and nearby Beverly Hills and Culver City, depending what you feel like. Going from casual to more upscale --

    Westside Tavern
    Freddy Smalls
    Waterloo & City
    Lukshon
    Lawry's
    Red Medicine
    Craft
    Mastro's

y'know, to this day, i think my favourite meal at craft has been at the bar.
of course, that was 42 and half chefs ago, but you get my drift.

Hinoki and the Bird is right in CC and is a very cool setting with a great bar and interesting food. Sotto is just down the street and has great Italian food and bar seating. That would be my preference.

No, that video is of the Ba Dum Tsssssh sound which typically follows a joke such as the insider / running joke that Thor123 told on the preceding post. You are correct however in that the insider / running joke is in relation to the post that you linked.

Mentioned Century City and nothing came to mind personally (I haven't tried Hinoki yet though).

Ok, thor, i'm guilty as charged on my comment.

Thanks for the input. Craft is looking like a winner, but you guys had to throw the Stinking Rose at me. Bastards! Now I'm totally confused.

                      Steve,

                      Skip The Stinking Rose.

These comedians were just messing with you.

And the consensus states that the winner is Craft by a proverbial landslide.

Stinking Rose? Not in the same realm as Craft. If you're serious about food, then it's going to be Craft.

If you want a scene and a good steak - Mastro's in Beverly Hills (about a 5 minute cab ride). Go to the bar on the top floor where you're going to find high priced hookers on their day off. Like Vegas but without the fat people in shorts. Wear a condom.

Hinoki/Bird - great room, food is creative but not as delicious as Craft.

This is by far the best post of the entire year.

And even if the steaks were as bad as the Stinking Rose...

This going to sound crazy but is any of the fish here, or any other seafood good too ?

Stiff drinks too ? i'm presuming a martini would set one back about 17 bucks and a scotch and soda at least 15 ?

The sea food tower is out of this world. One of the best anywhere. The martini's are huge and must be $15.

You mean price wise? Not really. It is about the same on the mains, maybe a bit more. The sea food tower can be very expensive if you get carried away as they add whole lobster(s) and tons of oysters etc

So if I wear shorts it will be just like Vegas? ;)

I've been to the Mastro's in Costa Mesa and was underwhelmed. Steak was tough and overcooked. I'm guessing I caught them on an off night, but it's not at the top of my list. I'll make sure I stop by a pharmacy if I go that route.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. I ended up at Craft and actually had a friend join me.

We started with the calamari salad. Calamari was cooked perfectly, and the salad was fantastic.

We split our entrées. The braised short ribs and the lamb. The lamb was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the short ribs were fall apart tender and very flavorful.

The sides we had were the beet greens and the sweet corn, both of them very good.

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and the service was great. My friend knows I hate birthday fanfare, especially in restaurants, so I'm guessing that somebody on the staff must've heard my friend wish me happy birthday because they brought out a free dessert, which I thought very nice touch.
