Sour Cherries

gracenote Aug 3, 2013 04:52 PM

There always seems to be a search for these in season. My local Stop and Shop (Gloucester) had them in pint baskets today. They were on the shelf with the raspberries, blueberries etc, and were from NY. I think they were $4.99.

I made a sour cherry pie with frozen berries from Bazaar West last month. Fantastic and so easy. Nice to have an off-season alternative.

I always snap up Bazaar's frozen cherries when they have them - make wonderful pies, blinis and pierogkies - mean to try their other frozen fruit

Around here, they are usually from the south coast of Lake Ontario in NY State, and only have a 2-week harvest window. Maybe three in good years.

Russo's still had them today, the price for the quart was $3.99, down from $5.99. They seemed a little smaller than a couple weeks ago but other than a couple moldy spots, in good condition.
