Main Street Grill, Watertown, CT

There's some real talent in the kitchen of this newish place on Main Street (Route 63) in downtown Watertown. Our group of three went last night for the first time. We entered the high-ceilinged, dimly lit space to find tables running down along both of the exposed-brick walls. "My Favorite Things" by John Coltrane played in the background, to be followed by other similar offerings. Our server was bouncy, a little disorganized and kept calling us "guys," but overall she got the job done. First to arrive at the table were stuffed mushrooms - silver dollar 'shrooms stuffed with chorizo sausage and Mt. Tom cheese. Superb, with just the right amount of heat. I could see going back soon to sit at the bar and order these again. Next came Bisteca, a good-sized salad consisting of sliced flank steak and cherry tomato salsa over mixed greens; and Quinoa Peppers, an entree of Bell peppers stuffed with quinoa, black beans, corn and Monterey Jack cheese. We also had a roasted half-chicken, juicy and very tasty, served with glazed carrots and what they call crispy mashed potatoes. Nothing terribly complex here, but all delicious, prepared with real talent and care, and handsomely presented. Our lone dessert was a slice of pistachio layer cake - it was painted a little too green for my taste, but easily hit that sweet spot. In all, Main Street Grill was a wonderful surprise to us. We'd heard it was good, but didn't imagine it was this good.
