Best East End Ice Cream (barring Ed's or Kawartha Dairy resellers)

I am dreaming of delicious ice cream and am having a hard time getting my fix in the east end of Toronto. Other than Ed's Real Scoop in Leslieville or the Beach, everyone else seems to be doling out Kawartha Dairy ice cream these days and it isn't so great.

Any suggestions?

  1. Can't comment on quality, but there's the place that's formerly named St Clair ice cream on Danforth, between Main and Victoria Park.

(Google maps shows them being called Maple Leaf Dairy now)

Hmmm.. yes I tried that place a few years ago. I was tempted by the promise of enormous scoops. And they were! Sadly the ice cream was sub-par.

Perhaps try some other flavours. I had one scoop ginger and one scoop coconut last time. Yum.

Quattro 4 Ragazze does ice cream I think. Maybe only gelato.

If the St Clair ice cream is now Maple Leaf Dairy AND Film Buff is serving Maple Leaf Dairy, perhaps it's time you did a new tasting.

          1. re: Googs

Noted! I will go this weekend - it is actually in my neck of the woods.

      2. I don't know for certain, but I doubt you'll have much luck with this thread, sadly. There's only a small handful of ice cream shops in the city that actually bother to make their own ice cream. Most just serve Kawartha or Nestle. Gelato seems to be slightly more popular, but even that isn't particularly abundant. I guess it's tough to make a go of it when the weather is so awful eight months of the year. I know when I go for ice cream in the winter it's usually a ghost town.

        1. How far east are we talking here? Don River or Rouge River?

Let's go with east to Victoria Park, the gateway to Scarborough.

          2. I was going to suggest giving the new Gelato Pizza a try, but then again, I'd never rule out Ed's. I think he deserves all the business he can handle.

From what I saw looking quickly a few months ago, Gelato Pizza only carries Gelato. Didn't see any ice cream there.

            2. Try the Film Buff on Queen St East. It's a video rental store and they sell ice cream on the side.

Not sure what brand it is - funny I never thought to ask - but it's very good. I must ask next time.

I forgot about the Film Buff. Yes, I don't know which brand they sell either...

Aha - I will have to go back to refresh my memory as it sounds delicious.

I thought there were import laws around ice cream (ie/ the reason why HD and BR both have to have Canadian factories. Not trying to nitpick but was wondering how I had never heard of Maple Valley and their ice cream - looks like it's from Massacheusets.

Hahaha! I called. They said "Maple." I searched. I found. Must be the wrong Maple. Could they mean Maple Leaf Dairy?

                        1. re: Full tummy

I have heard of Maypole. Maybe that was the brand?

                          1. re: justsayn

You guys realize that Google is a thing that exists, right? It's Maple Leaf Dairy.

                            1. re: Michael N

Hadn't heard of Google but there is such a thing as Maypole and maybe that's what the person said rather than Maple? I checked out this Google thing you speak of but it doesn't seem to know which word the person said to Full Tummy. Maybe I'm using it wrong?

                              1. re: justsayn

Google doesn't transcribe private conversations yet, but given what's been going on in the States, I'm sure they'll get there eventually. ;)

If you Google "film buff toronto ice cream", the fact that they use Maple Leaf Dairy comes up in the first page of results.

                                1. re: Michael N

I do look forward to the day! ;-)

Actually Full Tummy went one step better than googling if you ask me (because I wish more people on CH would do what FT did) FT called them and asked. Because they gave her one word and not the whole name, there was uncertainty. Nothing wrong with picking up the phone to get info.

                                    1. re: Michael N

Speaking of Google, I took your challenge and guess what. Read the testimonials.

                                      1. re: justsayn

Well, there you go. Serves me right for believing anything written by a commenter on blogto.

                                          1. re: justsayn

Funny it never even crossed my mind to find out who the producer was. I just knew it was good and enjoyed it from time to time. But thanks for solving the question.

If you go, I'll be interested to hear what others think about it.

                                      2. re: Michael N

You are right! I haven't been to Maple Leaf Dairy - last time I went it was still called St. Clair so I will have to see if anything has changed, in terms of quality since then.

                                        1. re: lucywinchester

According to their site, Film Buff carries Maypole Ice Cream, not Maple Leaf Dairy.

                                          1. re: justsayn

Thanks justsayn. I definitely didn't hear "Maypole", but I'm glad we know what it is now.
