Fusion cuisine in Detroit?

One of the wonderful aspects of Detroit is our abundance of immigrant communities: Mexican in SW Detroit, Arabic in Dearborn, Polish in Hamtramck, etc. Plus African-Americans in Detroit who brought us their southern cooking. But where is the uniquely Detroit *fusion* cuisine? Maybe I've been watching too many Food Channel shows glorifying Korean tacos in Los Angeles. Greek tacos at the local coney--is that it?

  1. I did have a pizza sub and a taco sub at Ricky's Sub Shop. I guess that counts too.

          John Cowleys and Son's in Farmington has excellent corned beef egg rolls as well as traditional Irish fare and for those beer drinkers(sorry boagman) an excellent selection.

            I stopped by and had an excellent $3.18 corned beef and swiss cheese egg roll. The corned beef was what one could expect in a good Reuben--in fact the whole experience was like a Reuben without kraut or dressing. The swiss cheese was evidently subtle--I wasn't 100% sure it was there. The Vietnamese owner said it is their most popular item. Cabbage is another popular filler.

            I asked her where the idea for a corned beef egg roll originated, and she replied she likes to cook and found it through experimentation. Apparently it is popular enough that a second location is open on 7 mile.

          2. They can't get a lot of the basics tasting right...fusion is just an excuse to some place an Asian bistro. What's next? A French cantina?
            I mean, why can't someone make a chicken schwarma pizza with toum?

              They do. Just not in Motor City.
