German food in San Antonio

tdombrow Jul 26, 2013 04:26 PM

So I'm driving down to SAT for my birthday this weekend and although I know there is plenty of Mexican food and BBQ out there, but I have to believe that with all the German immigrants, there HAS to be a decent German place in the area? Any suggestions? If no German food, then good food in general. I want to get as fat as I can for my birthday so the sky (or pie) is the limit.

It's just a short drive up to New Braunfels so do yourself a favor and go to Alpine Haus which is located just across the street from the Faust Hotel. We were there Thursday night and had a great German meal there. Jagerschnitzel to die for, beef rouladen that was the best I've had in years. Reservations a must as it sits in an old house that's been converted into the restaurant. It's only been open a few months but it's the best thing going.

Little Gretel in Boerne (River Rd.) has an excellent selection
of German food. Schnitzel, wursts, red cabbage and delicious spaetzle. They usually have a lunch special which
        is very special, indeed.

In San Antonio there aren't too many, it seems, there's Schilo's Deli and Beethoven Hall in the King William which is a German beer hall and has German bar food.
