About Damn Time! (GPI Asheville)

Scirocco Jul 26, 2013 10:55 AM

Just heard that the Grove Park Inn has done away with its parking fee for the outdoor areas (garage fees still in effect). There will be a fee for a couple of "special events" (gingerbread house viewing I assume), but otherwise will be free.

As I recall, they were defending the fee when they first took it over, but am glad they seem to have finally seen the light. It cracks me up a little that they want to seem all "neighborly" now.

Now, if they could just take "Omni" out of the name... It's tacky and obnoxious IMO. None of the other companies added their brand to the name.

no thanks what? had it up to here with them? don't like the food? (I don't like the food) just curious.

I enjoy going there every now and then for drinks and views, but refused to go when they started the parking fee.

Oh, I'm sorry. That wasn't directed at you. I've been their close neighbor since 1981. They used to be great when Ma Sammons owned it. Been going downhill in that department since she died and it was sold, etc. They're not very neighborly no matter what they say in the article.

I'm not fond of the food, either, to keep it on subject. : )

Oh, I totally disagree! Big corporations make my life better everyday!

I actually had a good meal at GPI last week...incredible but true. Nothing staggering, but a raw kale, roasted sweet potato , golden raisin, toasted pecan, pink peppercorn, citrus vinaigrette salad for lunch. Creative and correctly prepared. The best service I've seen at GPI...possiby ever. From hostess, waitress, concierge (who helped me with a little problem even though I wasn't a guest), and parking staff.

Could have just been a lucky day. Or it could be that Omni knows what customer service means and are teaching it to the staff. Time will tell.

yes, I was being a bit melodramatic. ha! what I meant is many times big corp coming in and taking over something that has been around forever and owned privately doesn't always get the local factor or some of the other nuances that have been in place for decades.

And I have nothing against well run big corp (have been happily employed by them!). :)

I do agree that Omni coming in is a HUGE improvement over KLM. From what those in the know have said, apparently KLM's purpose for buying was pretty much solely to flip the property. Which is what they did. So, they cheaped out across the board for the brief time they owned it.

I have also heard that Omni is working hard to raise the bar again. They are certainly known for quality. Sounds from your experience that it is moving in that direction and that is great to hear! And the fact that they dropped the parking fee tells me they are listening. I still think having Omni in the name is tacky. They could do a "hotel by Omni" or some sort of by line and still make their association known.

That's a good point. Like the Waldorf Astoria in NYC is owned by Hilton, but they didn't change the name !

Nancy: no, the Sunset Terrace. I doubt I'll ever go up there for a meal that doesn't involve that view. BTW, the thing I have complained about bitterly for years has * possibly* been fixed. They just opened the Sunset Cocktail Terrace, a space where you are welcomed to have just drinks and enjoy the view. i haven't tried it yet, but have high hopes. It's ironic, because I went up there a few weeks ago w/ my husband, discovered the $7 parking fee (we hadn't been in a while) and were turned away from having a drink on the Terrace around 4pm even though it was empty. (and with attitude) I was so pissed I swore I wasn't going back. But then I needed to take my Mom and Aunt somewhere fancy for lunch. And now it appears i'm going to have to eat my words further...

Oops, I meant KSL, not KLM!
