Kuala Lumpur - Bibimbap lunch at Bulgogi Brothers, Pavilion

Bibimbap lunch at Bulgogi Brothers today. This one at the Pavilion in downtown KL is one of the four KL branches of this Seoul-based chain which had expanded fast throughout the region in the past 7 years.

One nice thing about Korean-style seasonings in Malaysia: there's no need to really adjust to the local palates here since Malaysians also favoured the spicy-heat from the chillis, and the sweetness from the soy-Nashi pear marinade. But Bulgogi Brothers in Malaysia is also pork-free to suit the large Muslim clientele here.

My lunch was the dolsot bibimbap, a meal-in-a-stonepot combination of steamed rice with minced beef and a paraphernalia of finely-cut vegetables, mushrooms, sprouts and "kosari" (Korean fiddlehead ferns), topped with a raw eggyolk. Add the kochujang (spicy-soybean paste) and stir to mix the ingredients and paste together with the rice. Delish.

The side-dishes here were simple: kimchi, blanched spinach, sweetened lotus roots, sweet potatoes, corn, plus a bowl of consomme flavoured with "doenjang" (soybean paste).

Need to come back here to try the barbecued beef sometime.
