Szechuan peppercorns

Bigley9 Jul 19, 2013 08:39 AM

So in some of the discussions of Szechuan restuarants there have been comments about the quality of the szechuan peppercorns used, not just the quantity. Where can you buy good szechuan peppercorns? Is there a brand or region to look for?

Hmm, it is a bit of personal taste. Usually speaking, you want to buy Szechuan peppercorns from Szechuan region. This is, of course, a bit of oversimplification, but it is a relatively good rule of thumb.

Are Szechuan peppercorns from Szechuan readily available in Phila's Asian markets (Washington Ave in particular?)

Sorry, I have never been to Washington Ave Asian market. I assume they should carry Szechuan peppercorn from Szechuan. If you have a Szechuan restaurant you like, then you can even buy yours from the restaurant. Alternatively, these peppercorn are fairly inexpensive, so you can always grab two different bags instead of one.

I buy them at Penzey's. They have a great retail store in Chestnut Hill, as well as their online store.
