Looking for a fairly casual, but still nice, easy to hear each other talk date restaurant with really good food in San Francisco. Any ideas?

I sat inside, but at a table for six. It is not a large room and the 2-tops might be close together. It just struck me as the kind of place I might bring someone I was getting to know.

Having had a first date at Blue Plate, I'd agree. Nice low-key atmosphere with very good food and a fun wine list.

                And I recommend:

                Blue Plate
grilled hearts of romaine smoked bacon, avocado, cherry tomato, balsamic, grana $10

[BP was the second/dinner stop on a memorable although logistically complex date which started with drinks at Sea Salt/Berkeley and continued with drinks downtown].

I havent been to the "new" Helmand but thought he old place was pretty solid (well, untill the mountain fell on it). although while some privacy is nice, a couple of times the HP dining room felt a little desolate ... maybe one or two other parties there.

I like Le Charm's prix fixe.
