Crabs in DC? (Actual DC, not MD)

Does anyone know where to get crabs in the district? I love them but am not trucking out to MD.

  1. Well assuming you mean blue crabs and not Dungeness, stone, etc....Dancing Crab in Tenleytown. But I wouldn't bother. Captain White's Seafood City down at the docks. Haven't been so I can't vouch for them. No seating other than picnic tables outside - not my idea of fun in this weather, but if you like the heat...there are other places at the Maine Ave Fish Market.

I live in Maryland (close in). I truck for crabs. At the current prices, I want the best and the best means getting in the car. But that's ok. We make an event out of it.

I thought the Dancing Crab shut down a while back, no? You can go across the river to the Quarterdeck. That's a fairly short schlepp from the District. In this heat, I would reserve a table inside.

    2. I'm guessing you mean trucking out to the Bay. There are options close in but not in DC proper (aside from those Just Visiting listed).

Steamers in Bethesda; and I think there's another place in Bethesda.

The Quarterdeck near Ft. Myer (behind-ish from the Iwo Jima)

      Capt. Pells in Fairfax.

Not sure, but American Seafood in Arlington may sell them live.

Oh, and I think the tourist hole down by the wharf sells them, too, but I've only gone once there and that was over a decade. Phillips.

You are probably thinking of Bethesda Crab House:

I haven't been but it is always busy.

        I don't think I would trust Steamers.

Haven't been in probably a decade. I don't think I finished when I ate at Dancing Crab. Was unplussed with Quarterdeck. I have liked Captain Pell's though that's even been about 4 years now for me.

            Just options for the OP.

Best crabs I've had this summer were at May's in Frederick. No help for the OP probably, but they're good crabs. Fresh and heavy with meat, not waterlogged. AYCE was 37 bucks and included fried oysters, steamed shrimp, corn and other goodies if you wanted them. Get there early.

Second Mays, my go-to and only 25 minutes or so from home. You pay for it but you get your money's worth. Catch an early Keys' game and call ahead for carryout on the way home.

Phillips now has a "crab house" on the side of the restaurant. I haven't been in, but I have walked past and it seems to have a crabhouse vibe. Might be worth checking out. Accessible from L'Enfant metro or #74 bus.

Only time I ate crabs at Phillips, they were dead.

Well you want them live when they're cooked which these were not. You could tell by the flabby unpleasant texture.
