Masterchef 7/17 spoilers

No spoilers here yet, but I'm sure there will be some downthread after tonight. Last week the winning team won tickets to the all star baseball game that was last night. (7/16). Apparently Graham Elliott did NOT go to the game with them because.... He is got laproscopic surgery yesterday morning.

Also, it looks like the first hour tonight is a repeat with a new episode for the 2nd hour.

I'm not a huge People fan, but I thought this was an interesting article on how Graham is addressing his health and why he made this choice.

  1. Wow, best wishes to him. I know the show is so heavily edited about good guys/bad guys (contestants and judges), but Graham seems nice and well-grounded. Hope he's successful in regaining his health.

I'm glad he's doing something for his family and the other chefs are supporting him. One thing I have liked about the show is that they don't always make him the butt of fat jokes. Sure the sumo costume out of the ocean when the other guys were riding seadoos was kind of bad for him. But they did give him a nice motorcycle to ride up in when they gave Joe a Vespa (or vespa knock off scooter).

    2. I think I heard Joe diss Chinese food as not as elevated as Italian food when he was blasting Bethy.

I was very unhappy with that remark. Also unhappy that the preview for next week shows them cooking outside, possibly game meat? Bethy is a fascinating woman. She hunts and recently built her own Bow for archery hunting. There were so many interesting ways they could have used her on the show, and obviously an outdoors/survivalist type experience would have been her chance to shine.

He basically dissed all Asian food as not being as refined as European (Italian or French).

Every time Joe makes a comment like that He comes off as more and more intolerant. He should know better.

I understand he isn't a chef, but it still makes me laugh every time there is a mystery box challenge they ask Gordon and Graham, "What would you make with that?" They NEVER ask Joe. I would assume if he's qualified to judge he should be qualified to cook or have an opinion.

Actually my favorite part of the show is hearing what Gordon or Graham would make, or if one of the two cooks.

You have to credit Bastianich in growing up in the restaurant business, and even though he is more of the business side of things, he has tasted enough food between his Mothers restaurants and his association with Batalli in NY to credit him with knowing good and bad food better than the average person.

That said, his family's restaurants in Pittsburgh and Kansas City suck.

The point about chinese and european really should have been nuanced. I think there was a grain of truth, that is that Szechuan as a cuisine is highly peppered, and does mask mushrooms. I would argue that there are plenty other styles of cooking from China that would have been better suited to showcasing the mushroom.

I wish they would at least ask him, what do you want to eat based on that basket whether he can make it or not

            2. re: melpy

Glad I'm not the only one who heard that. I'm not surprised that he would think so - he comes across as pretty close-minded overall.

Joe's B comment really offended me. While I agree that Bethy's dish of sichuan noodles and mushrooms probably wasn't a good combo was his comment really necessary? That ingredients as fine (great, exquisite) as those mushrooms, and Asian food isn't as refined as european food to showcase them? Seriously?

Those mushrooms could have been showcased properly in chinese food, even Sichuan cuisine. I bet Yu Bo (of Yu's Family restaurant in ChengDu) would have made a beautiful mushroom dish.

              1. re: beetlebug

Mushrooms are a staple of Chinese cooking (although not necessarily fresh mushrooms) - cooked many different ways. I'm pretty sure Joe doesn't know what he's talking about.

            4. Was rather pleased to see Eddie win the sausage challenge. Natasha would have been my second choice. Krissi? Not so much. And again, she disses Bri, whose tempeh sausage was very well received. Guess what, Krissi? Not ALL sausage is meat. Moron.

As for Eddie, he was masterful in choosing who got fresh mushrooms and who got canned. Giving James and Jordan fresh seemed dumb at first (to me), but Eddit knew they couldn't edit themselves - and they didn't and ended up in the bottom with Bethy.

But I honestly thought Luca belonged in the Bottom 3. His "mushroom soup" was vile. When he attempted to pour it out, it looked like an overly-thick gravy. HOW did that not make it into the bottom group?

And again, Krissi beats down on Bri - and Bri wins the mushroom challenge with Natasha the other top choice. So they'll be team captains next week.

I wonder how much time goes by from the end of the cooking to the tasting. If it is long that could have hurt Luca's soup so he got a pass.

Except they discuss presentation as being part of their grade. They've dinged others for having crap on a plate with messy plating.

              2. Joe Bastianich --- Lidia's ogre son. When Joe lost all the weight, it changed his persona (more specifically his demeanor). I hope that the same transformation isn't going to effect Graham. Imagine having two Joe B's bashing contestants up there on future MC episodes ?? Ugh. No thanks.

I have no doubt that they each are given "roles" to play. I have seen Graham on other shows where he is the harsh critic. And I have seen him as a contestant when he played the happy go lucky chubby guy. I really wonder if Joe got worse after losing all the weight.. he just oozes the B word the minute he opens his mouth. I think the ratio of his positive to negative comments is something like 1:10 .. leaving me little doubt that he is just a B...

I was kind of shocked when I saw Nigella Lawson on The Taste - she was a mega bitch on the show, but then again so were all the other judges on it.
