Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in TX (including Dallas and El Paso)

Bedford (suburb of DFW)

Will be in Bedford, TX on business Oct 27-31. Would like to hear about local restaurants. Not looking for chains (unless local), but am interested in places for good, quick lunches and decent sit-down dinners. Would love to get a REALLY good steak while there -- if you can't get one of those in Texas I don;t know where you can...

Thanks

    1. Only help that I can really offer is if you have a car or don't mind taking a taxi. In Hurst (a neighboring suburb) there is a spot that comes recommended by some friends called Cafe Panache. Call it an american style bistro. I believe that it is still byob as it waits for a liquor license. For steaks, drive into the western part of Dallas and go to Pappas Brothers. Dry aged prime and a huge wine list. Can't offer any help for the good quick lunchs. If you are willing to drive further into Dallas or Fort Worth, post a reply and I'll offer some guidance on them.

As I have never traveled to the area (this is the first of many future business trips to the area) I am not familiar with the geography. If it is not a long trek I am willing to get around a bit. Would love to try regional specialties, etc. So, hit me with your best suggestions. If I can get to them I will certainly report back here with my thoughts.

          Thanks again!

I think that you'll still be limited to Bedford for good quick lunchs, so Scott has good suggestions for that area (also there is a chain called Pappadeaux that is ok for seafood). For sit down dinners, I'll still stick with Pappas Bros for steak. In Ft Worth, there is a restaurant called Tim Love's Lonesome Dove Bistro in the Stockyards. He is one of the best at southwestern cuisine (he was invited to cook at James Beard House earlier this year). If you like game or southwestern cuisine, try it. In Dallas, Lola and it's sister restaurant (The Tasting Room at Lola) are board favorites and highly reccomended. The Green Room is worth a visit for very good food and unique atmosphere. If you're interested in Mexican (or Tex-Mex) food, I'd reccomend Via Real in Irving/Las Colinas or one of the Nuevo Leon or Luna de Noche branches. You're probably better off looking for bbq in Ft Worth then Dallas. If you're looking for any other types of cuisine, let us know.

Thanks for all the info, I hope to be able to hit a few of the spots you have suggested. As I will be visiting the area several times a year from now on, I will try to hit those I miss on a future trip.

                  Thanks again!

              • For good steak, like Dave said, I think you're safer in Dallas. Pappas Brothers is probably the easiest to get to (and one of the best). One Chowhounder, however, has reported getting a good steak at The Chop House in Fort Worth (which would be much closer for you).

For lunches, you could go to Railhead (the Grapevine location) for BBQ or Los Molcajetes (on the dividing line between FW and Haltom City) for good Tex-Mex.

You'll find mostly chain restaurants in Bedford. But, as far as chains go, Abuelo's is pretty good (a regional Tex-Mex chain), as is Hoffbrau (a local chain with reasonably priced lunch specials, including a decent CFS). Beyond those, I wouldn't know what to recommend in that area.

                Scott
