  1. After seeing these mentioned in a recipe I'd like to try, I've been searching locally for these, as well. And with no luck.

Apparently, they're called different names In other cultures: Indian walnut, Kemiri, Varnish tree, Nuez de la India, Buah keras or Kukui nut.

I've been looking mostly at 99 Ranch, but I'm guessing an Indian spice store might be my next stop.

    1. Since they don't have these at Ranch 99, you might check with Thuan Phat (formerly Vien Dong) on Linda Vista, or possibly even International Market off Balboa and Mt. Alifan. Aladdin Cafe on Clairemont Mesa may still have a small market next door.

Success!! I actually DID eventually find these at 99 Ranch, in the Indonesian section. You have to look veeeeery carefully... small clear plastic bag about 4x4"

Glad you found them. Ranch 99 would have been the first place I'd have looked, too, so I was surprised when it sounded like they didn't have them. Hope the ones you found work out. Cheers.
