Pantheon vs. Avli?

  • 7

My girlfriend loves Greek food so for her birthday I wanted to take her to a good spot. I narrowed it down to Pantheon and Avli, which would you guys recommend?

  1. Pantheon is known for their fish, Avli for savoury pies.

Both are good spots although others on this board should be able to provide more in depth comments.

    Prima??

Avli has a somewhat more interesting menu, whereas choices at Pantheon are more typical for Danforth Greek. I agree with Millygirl that Pantheon is known for its fish, and Avli for its pies.

Portions tend to be larger at Pantheon, and prices tend to be a little more expensive at Avli.

Avli used to be considered the best place for dips, but I haven't ordered any recently.

I'd probably lean towards Avli for a birthday, mostly because it tends to be less crowded and quieter. Avli's decor/atmosphere is also a little more upscale.

OP, which dishes does your girlfriend tend to order?

We have a friend that thinks Avili is the best Greek restaurant on the Danforth. We have been there about 3 times and I have never really liked the food. Looks good on the menu but lacks taste on the plate.

I think it depends on what you order at most Greek restaurants on the Danforth. Most restaurants do at least a few dishes fairly well.

I haven't eaten at Avli in the last 6 months, but I usually stick to the mezes, the spanakopita and the pies. I haven't been impressed by their fried calamari or their avgolemono soup.

I also wasn't impressed by a recent order of fried calamari at Pantheon, but I did like the grilled octopus, the mixed grill and the moussaka on my second last visit.

I was underwhelmed by a recent visit to the Ouzeri, and even more underwhelmed by a visit to Christina's a couple months ago.

Pan is my current favourite for mezes (Greek share plates). Megas probably serves my favourite pork souvlaki out of the full service restaurant options on the Danforth.

Hey not to hijack a post but did you happen to notice the new fish and grill resto that opened up this week, very close to Avli and Pantheon?

            Any inside info??

              (reply to millygirl's above post)

No inside info, but the short name is Kritamos and the address is 443 Danforth Ave. Alas, I don't have any useful info about the important details (the food).

She actually likes fish, mainly salmon so it looks like Pantheon will be the place to go. How is there taramasalata dip btw? She loves that as well.

          I appreciate the responses!
