Laurel Deli & Desserts in Fort Bragg [Mendocino County]

Melanie Wong Jul 15, 2013 12:44 PM

Continuing the carb-loaded day, I walked over to Laurel Deli by the Skunk Train to check out the desserts. Pieces of the giant cookies offered as samples were grainy with sugar and not that good. I'd heard fruit pies are the specialty here. A cold case featured lemon meringue, coconut cream, banana cream pie, and another display had olallieberry pie and olallieberry cobbler. I opted for the cobbler to eat-in sans ice cream.

A big serving for $4. Minimal crust, sprinkled on top in the form of crumbs that taste of shortening and not butter. Plenty of olallieberries, not oversweetened, but stiff with cornstarch. Still, there's something about eating warm cobbler out of an antique style pressed glass dish on a table topped with vintage newspaper ads sitting next to "Daisy", a retired Skunk Train locomotive that probably makes this seem better than it really is. Yeah, I'd get it again and probably add a cup of Thanksgiving coffee.
