Name this vegetable

Had a couple of fantastic meals at a raw food place here in Reno called Rawr. As I said in my review, the food is so good I even liked the vegan food.

I guess I could ask the chef this question the next time I go in, but look at the black things on the top of this dish.

The best guess of a dining companion is that it is fennel. Tastes better than any fennel I've tasted before. Any other guesses?

Doesn't look like fennel to me. From here they look like sprouted black lentils, but it seems unlikely that those would be confused with fennel.

Lentils seem like a much better guess - do you remember the texture/mouth feel?

I'd go with the lentil guesses. Lentils are very often cooked with fennel.

First item on the menu, "Trumpet mushroom "scallops" on couscous, harissa, curry spotted lentil"
          That would be my guess.

I may have misheard lentils as fennel or misremembered it. There was plenty of wine consumed. ;-)
            Thanks for your help.

Fennel seed or ground fennel could have been used as a seasoning in the dish.

Black ("caviar") lentils would be my guess.
