Info on Market Basket new locations?

Rumors that MB is considering the Star Market location in the Dedham plaza have me hopeful. Can anyone confirm? What about Waltham?
Thanks

  1. Possibly, it seems mb is eye balling some of shaw's failures. Mb is going where shaws once stood in south Attleboro near the train stop.

I remember when that Shaw's was first built. It was bright and shiny and I used to make trips there specifically because it was so much nicer than the Shaw's in Sharon near my house. I was driving home from Providence last week late at night and stopped there, thinking I could pick up a cold drink, and it was gone...

      1. re: mwk

        Hi mwk
It's been gone for at least a few months. They changed the name of the plaza to Boston plaza. The Sharon shaws isn't doing well either, the Stoughton shaws is closing soon.

    2. I wonder if they might take over the Star Market in Quincy? That would be outstanding news...

That would be a dream for me too! Especially since my parents are moving right across the street, which means a trip to MB would be the reward for regular parental visits.

        1. re: mwk

Has the Star Market in Quincy closed? I haven't been done that way in a bit. I would be thrilled with a MB in that location

          1. re: Pegmeister

Nope still there. Drove by it today in fact. I think mwk and I are just dreaming that Star/Shaws might want to shed that particular store as part of their restructure, and MB would be a nice replacement if they want to expand their presence on the South Shore.

            1. re: Pegmeister

It's still there. It's barely hanging on, too, judging from the very few cars in the parking lot.

          2. According to Waltham Patch 6/28/13

Market Basket, Others Confirmed as Waltham Polaroid Site Tenants

Construction on buildings at the complex may begin in 2013.

Last reference I could find its supposed to open the end of 2013, but its mid summer now and I don't think they have started on the building yet.

Can't wait until this one opens as its going to save me some time trekking back and forth to the Billerica location. I try to avoid the new Burlington location as its just not pleasant to shop there - I always feel like I'm in someones way

              1. re: LStaff

That was certainly always my feeling about the old Burlington location, but the few times I've shopped at the newer one, it's seemed relatively roomy.

                1. re: LStaff

There is activity visible from Rte. 128 there for sure. There appears to be a sizeable foundation in place, but it's impossible to tell what it's for.

Hard to imagine anything will be ready before the end of the year, that's for sure.

              2. The store in Revere (Northdate mall, on Rt 60) is scheduled to open in the fall

Hadn't realize a MB in Revere is in the works. Delightful! Given how I usually go to the Chelsea location from Melrose (it's usually faster than Reading....it seems the Revere location will be more like the Reading location in size)

                2. One recently opened in Hudson, MA.

                  1. Here is a list of all the annouched new MB locations that are in the planning or in development.

                    -N. Conway, NH
                    -Waltham
                    -Revere
                    -Lynn
                    -Athol
                    -Bddeford, ME
                    -Bridgewater
                    -S. Attleboro

fwiw, the South Attleboro location is under construction at present, they are actively working the site. (it's right off 95, where the s. attleboro train station is).

                      1. re: windward

It would be awesome if they brought one into the South Boston, MA. area. There was once two in Dorchester, MA. I know there is one in Chelsea, MA. For us seniors who live in the Boston area have to travel to far & safety issues doing the travel.

                      2. So on the heels of posting the question about a possible Dedham location, this arrived in my in-box. I think Artie DeMoulas is the last in the family at the top. Don't have any way to check the veracity, but found it interesting.

                        1. On a semi-related note, has anyone heard anything about the Ashland Market Basket? I ask, because while standing for quite a while at the deli counter waiting for my number to be called (I pulled #67 while they were serving #51), I noticed the following written on their specials board:

                          "SAVE OUR MARKET BASKET"

I think that's an employee campaign not for one location, but for Demoulas' job as CEO (as the board is voting to remove him). To wit:

                            http://savemarketbasket.com/

edit: or, exactly what was posted above. Basically, I think you can change that 'semi' to 'entirely' related ;)

                              1. re: Spelunker

Thanks - I knew the CEO vs board story, but didn't make the connection because I was focused on some location specific meaning.

                            1. I've heard rumors that MB bought the Building 19 plaza on Rte. 18 in Weymouth, but nothing more than that. Building 19 and the rest of the stores are still in operation.

                              1. I also heard that they bought the Hilltopper land in Saugus and that was a while ago.

                                1. any MB coming to the Halifax, Pembroke ma area?

I suspect we all have to wait and see if MB will even manage to stay in business at this point. The construction was still going on at the Waltham site last week but this hole they've dug themselves into is going to take a while to get out of. If they manage to stay in business, I won't be surprised if any new store plans get shelved.

                                  2. The new MB in Waltham is awaiting shelving and stuff, the new one in Revere has been ready to open since April as has the Attelboro one but the new regime at MB is put a stop to all new stores opening leaving these towns with big empty stores and jobs as promised.

Let's just hope MB can recover if their board/stockholders ever wake up and see this work stoppage will bankrupt and possibly force the company to close this thriving business and everyone will loose, stock holders, CEO's, employees and customers.

I wouldn't expect any new Market Basket stores in the near future, as they'll have their hands full both logistically (restocking and restarting the existing locations) and financially (repaying various loans from operating revenue). The only new spots are likely to be the ones that have already been built, like Waltham, and which were awaiting the results of the "family feud" before launching.

That all makes sense. Have no idea then what may go in there.

One of the Burlington associates told me today that the inside MB rumor mill was that Artie T wanted to move ahead with opening Revere and Waltham as soon as possible a) because Waltham will be one of their flagship locations and b) it would be a very positive statement about Market Basket post-feud.

                                          2. Just drove by the one in South Attleboro and nothing is going.

MB Somerville had signs posted that Waltham was hiring.

                                              2. It was announced this week that the Revere location is scheduled to open November 1. (Wegmans in Burlington opens the Sunday before that.)

Actually opened this morning. Did the weekly shop there - it was mobbed, had to circle the parking lot twice for a spot. Saw Arthur T. and probably most of the chain's upper management standing around (identified by their suits and ties). Quite a bit of media attention too.

Overall not much different from other MB stores, though they do have a butcher shop for premium cuts. 24 checkout lanes. Less shelf space for Mexican/Hispanic foods than Chelsea, and maybe a bit more for Italian specialties (this is in Revere, after all).

                                                  1. re: simonr

Revere is 80,000 sf. Chelsea is 138,000 sf.

Revere is next to Price Rite.

                                                2. According to a September piece in the Sun Chronicle, Market Basket is aiming to open its South Attleboro store before the holidays.

                                                  Here's hoping!

                                                  1. All those openings are major good news. Yes, the construction was complete. But inventory and hiring all those new people costs money. Artie T. must be feeling good about the way the business has been running since he came back! (Yes, I know he's said that new store growth will slow after these three open, but still, if things were tight he would not be able to open them all so quickly.)

he was quoted several weeks ago saying store sales were all back at 100% of pre-strike revenue.

                                                      good stuff.

                                                    2. New stores opening or under construction include: Revere, Attleboro, Waltham, Littleton, MA.

They may need to re-evaluate any future plans for new stores or remodels as the new owner now has a sizable mortgage payment.

                                                      1. I wonder if the powers that be are looking into the Hanover/Pembroke area. The bldg 19 parking lot is EMPTY! What a perfect spot for a Market Basket!!!!!!

I have no idea about that location, but Artie T. has said that construction of new locations will probably slow after the current slew of new stores (Revere, Attleboro, Waltham, all of which were constructed, but not yet open). MB needs to rebuild its cash reserves after the events of this past summer. It's not just the lost sales, there is the issue of paying down the debt that had to be taken on to buy out the Arthur S. faction (likely a priority).

                                                          1. re: PinchOfSalt

We mapped the location of every supermarket in the region. It's interesting how the definition of a "location" has changed. It used to be you looked for holes in coverage, at the age of competitors' stores (because you come in new and they're tired), at access drive times, trade area income levels, etc., but chains like MB and Wegmans are defining location differently; they see their market niches and believe they can prosper where a regular chain sees too much competition or too much cost to build.

As a note, they also likely define trade areas differently. I don't know but when a standard 3 mile or 5 mile radius for a local supermarket becomes 10 or 20, the mindset about locations is vastly different.

There's a lot of focus on the MB acquisition debt but I don't think any of us know what pre-existing debt levels were and thus whether this is a big load at all. If there was not much debt, this debt load isn't bad, given what little we do know about MB's profitability. I'm speaking about the long battles over how much profit would be distributed versus re-invested, banked, etc. In other words, they were spinning cash before but we don't know how much and may have had low debt.

I'd say the top priority was to get the new stores open because the incremental revenue/profit is hugely important; big loans can be set at revenue/income levels and ratios to debt service so turning that dead money sitting in a hole or partly finished building lifts your ratio and gives you breathing room. Stores in planning may have to wait but we have no idea what their plans are anyway.
