Bye Bye Canteen

How sad that my plans for my first night will go astray because Canteen is closing before I get there at the end of September. (sigh!)
I was hoping to just walk a few blocks from my hotel in Union Square.
Any suggestions? Upscale is okay too. Ambitious ingredients are not my mate's style. We like good Asian and Chinatown is close by I think.

  1. I've only been for breakfast but maybe take a look at Sweet Woodruff and see if it appeals. Chinatown is indeed close by but not much there that really stands out for us (bearing in mind we are spoiled for choice re Chinese at home in Vancouver so YMMV). A bit further afield is Tadich Grill for very plain but good fish, no resos. Also a (very) short cab ride away is Lers Ros in the Tenderloin for excellent Thai, especially the appetizers. Or maybe Burmese Kitchen. And Cotogna is equally close by cab if you can snag a reso.

      Thanks for the suggestions.
I think I have decided on AQ. I have not yet seen their Autumn menu but the Summer one looks nice enough.
I imagine we'll have to take a small taxi ride, right?

Hope you enjoy it (and get a seat by the open kitchen!). We went last November and weren't blown away but it was interesting. It's 7 blocks from Union Square but the blocks along Mission are LOOOONG and it is not an amazing stroll as things aren't really open and it's kinda dark. Perhaps a cab would be in order.

Well, until I hear of something in the area similar to AQ (rather than a seating at a counter for example), I might like to consider it.
The menu looked interesting but I guess it's a wait n' see.
          Taxi ride for sure!
          Thanks grayelf.
