Blackbird Tavern (Middlefield, CT)

So glad the parking lot was full at Plan B tonight...I've got a better plan B for ya: Blackbird Tavern--my "plan A" for a burger out from now on!

If you appreciate and long for a rare burger, on a nice, fresh, soft bun, topped simply with cheese (American, cheddar or blue), lettuce, tomato, onion...with hand-cut shoestring fries and coleslaw, look no further. To think how many times I have driven past this place, I could kick myself for not figuring it out sooner. The Blackbird is OUTSTANDING.

No need for tricked out burgers when what you order arrives cooked just the way you like it. I kinda felt like Dorothy when she figured out she had the power to go home all along. To look high and low for a quality burger and find one practically in your own backyard--whattatreat! There's no place like home.

XM mellow rock plays in the background. You'd swear you stepped straight back into the 70s (soundtrack included) except there are no ferns in the establishment and folks dress as we do today. :) Something about the whole experience was extra comforting to me today, having driven all the way from G'bury in the rain. I'm pretty sure all of Middlefield and the surrounding area is well aware how good it is as the parking lot was packed. There's outdoor seating with umbrellas for when the weather is more pleasant.

Super-friendly service! How I love when the person explaining the menu options actually knows what she's talking about and enthusiastically shares her favorites. Thank you, Jessica.

I can't wait to get back to try the fried scallops with lemon aioli and the warm goat cheese salad...among other highly tempting options. It's dangerous how close to home this is for a kat who drives fast and can get there in close to five minutes. :) I'll be back again and again, no question.

Like Katty, I also hate burgers that are overcooked and dry. I enjoy a nice medium rare burger and when I read her review of Blackbird Tavern I decided to drive to Middlefield today to have lunch there. Alas, they are not open for lunch. I don't think their website or their FB page lists their hours so just wanted to warn everyone that it looks like they just do dinner.

Oh, no! I hope you didn't drive too far! Well, thanks for letting us know. I was looking forward to stealing away there for lunch very soon. Darn.

Just found this, which confirms your lack of lunch:

Just got home from dinner at Blackbird's Tavern and once again we agree wholeheartedly with Katty. I had the burger (of course) and it was very good....cooked perfectly medium rare as requested and accompanied with some nice thinly cut fries and some cole slaw. Slaw was okay but not as good as the area's best IMO, Lenny and Joe's in Westbrook. I had the tex mex egg rolls and they were an excellent app. Mrs. Mensch went with a special, an Asian influenced salad with a ginger dressing that included warm, tender chunks of chicken. She was quite satisfied. Service was friendly and professional with our waitress (Jenn) anticipating drink refills before we even asked. Overall, a very pleasant experience. We will definitely be back.
