Interesting Restaurants Near Avignon?

  • 5

Visiting France from California next month and will spend 4 nights in Avignon at Le Mirande. One dinner at chef's table in hotel but need to select restaurants the other 3 nights. My wife loves architecture and significant, old buildings. Would be greatly appreciative of recommendations for restaurants in buildings fitting that bill. Does not need to be Michelin star restaurant but essential to find very good food and great wine. Not opposed to driving up to an hour if worth the effort. Much thanks.

  1. Here are a few restaurants in Avignon in beautiful, old buildings. Sorry I haven't eaten at any of them in the last year.

Christian Etienne, is right next to La Mirande, and is also in an historical bldg. Usually considered the best restaurant in Avignon; details on the site

The 4 star Hotel d'Europe, the former “hotel particulier” (luxury home) of the Marquis de Graveson, was built by the Marquis in the 1580; it became a hotel around 1700. The hotel and restaurant are located on the exquisite Place Crillon, near the river and remparts. You pass through the iron gates of the hotel, and then enter a large, tranquil courtyard with a fountain,

Lovely restaurant in a courtyard in a 19th century mansion built by the founder of Pernod Pastis fame, located just off on the beautiful Rue des Teinturiers (cloth dyers ‘ street.) The tree filled courtyard is especially beautiful in spring, summer and fall.

WIll try to think of others.

    1. some more casual restaurants in Avignon that we've enjoyed include l'Isle Sonnante, La Fourchette, and Hiely-Lucullus.

      1. Great suggestions -- thanks very much sderham and chefjune.

        1. We live in Northern CA and also have a home in Provence about 30 miles from Avignon. In addition to Le Mirande, three restaurants we like in Avignon for lunch/dinner are L'Essentiel, La Fourchette, and Le 5 Sens. We are not big fans of Hiely Lucullus. Nearby, we like Coteaux et Fourchette in Cairanne, L'Oustalet in Gigondas, Le Bistrot du Paradou in Paradou, and Maison Bru in Eygalières.
