Smoked and Cracked
It's a new, small café on the west side of Mt. Pleasant just north of Davisville. Here's the website: http://smokedandcracked.com/
Lobster is front and centre here with a variety of treatments.
It is also open for breakfast with a couple of great paninis, scones and muffins. I've only been for breakfast and had the smoked peameal, egg and cheese. They smoke their own peameal bacon over hickory. It's a very smoky (in a good way) flavour. They serve a coffee specially blended for them from one of the coffee places in St. Lawrence Market. This place is very different from anything else in the neighbourhood and very welcome here.
I really wanted to like this place but am having ambivalent feelings after two visits. During the first visit, I sampled the smoked peameal sandwich wasn't too bad but nothing special. I also tried the homemade potato chips, which were ok but a much thicker cut than I like.
Yesterday, I tried the cold lobster sandwich, which was disappointing. The good: 5 or 6 small (2-3 mm) chunks of tail meat lightly dressed in mayo. The bad: served on a wide, hard roll (almost thought it was stale) meant that I was chewing through more bread than l wanted. I would have preferred a softer, smaller hot dog roll. There were also largish lettuce leaves which were totally distracting but probably meant to fill out the roll. For $13.95 it was served with the homemade potato chips, but I would have preferred just the roll (albeit smaller) with more lobster for that price. The homemade lemonade was thankfully, not too sweet but had a bit of an odd aftertaste that I couldn't put my finger on.
On another occasion, my friend had the hot lobster roll, which was soaked in hot salted butter which made it too salty and greasy.
I do want them to succeed as they are a unique offering in the nabe, but those lobster rolls aren't really cutting it for me.
I think that the flavour in the lemonade is vanilla bean. It's definitely not on the sweet side.
As I mentioned previously, I liked the smokiness of the peameal in the breakfast sandwich. I tried the breakfast lobster panini and while it was tasty, the lobster flavour was kind of overshadowed by the egg in the sandwich.
