Chowdown Porta Asbury Park
- seal Jul 9, 2013 07:15 AM
It's summer and time we Monmouth County hounds got together again. After talking with a few of our regulars, we've decided on lunch at Porta in Asbury Park on Saturday, July 27th at 11:30.
We will grab one of those long wooden tables and eat, drink, chat, and generally hound it up ;o)
As per the rules of the board, please reply to the following email address:
with the heading July chowdown.
Hope to see lots of new and familiar faces,
I will be away as well, would have been nice to put some faces to the more prolific names.
"excellent" review in the NYT today, btw
I wish I could make it!! We have a birthday party to go to. I love Porta, and I love my fellow hounds :)
Next time for sure!!!
Totally forgot about it as I did email. Didn't sleep well last nite; went to the beach and got off about 11:40 in nearby Deal. Things haven't been the same of late - lost my Golden, Cal to cancer and had to put him down last week.
I really wanted to come but alas, had to work. I hope you (or any other participants) will be providing a post-Porta update.
The good, the bad and the ugly.
In reverse order...\
The ugly - =Mark and I were the only two guys there and neither of us would win any beauty contests. I'm amazed the two women there were able to keep their food down ;o)
The bad - Despite receiving seven affirmatives and six maybes, only four hounds showed up. To be fair, it was a nice, beachy kind of day and we did call it for 11:30, but still.
The good - It's Porta. The pizza, octopus, salad, and dessert were enjoyed by all - no surprise. Curlz is a pleasure to talk to and very up on her food from all over the world. It turned out we had both fallen in love with the same hard-to-find gelato joint near the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Also, Coldbeer, with his namesake in hand, showed up as we were finishing up to say hello. It was very nice all around.
The next chowdown is coming up soon. =M and I were discussing the possibility of an Ethiopian feast at Ada's Latin Flavor in Long Branch, so keep those long, floppy, hound ears open as Ada can cook!
One last quick note. I got a few emails from hounds who said they showed up and couldn't find us so maybe I am not the best host for these things. I guess I was too busy enjoying myself.
Still, =M did make a CH sign for our table and I did not wear a hat to disguise my bald head, but I will let somebody else take care of the next chowdown.
Apologies to anyone we missed.
We were the first table directly behind the hostess station and had a sign with a big "CH" on it. Also, the hostess and manager had been told that we were there with members of an online food group. I honestly don't know what more could have been done other than scope the place out ahead of time and arrange for a specific table. This is hard to do though given that when the Mgr and hostess were trying to seat me when I first got there and asked how many we would be I sort of shrugged and said "3 to 15?"...
