Chowdown Porta Asbury Park

It's summer and time we Monmouth County hounds got together again. After talking with a few of our regulars, we've decided on lunch at Porta in Asbury Park on Saturday, July 27th at 11:30.

We will grab one of those long wooden tables and eat, drink, chat, and generally hound it up ;o)

As per the rules of the board, please reply to the following email address:

with the heading July chowdown.

Hope to see lots of new and familiar faces,

I already put glue on my monitor, thus far it hasn't stuck.

        Lol - too funny.

I guess they don't lock these posts down anymore, but I'm liking the new sticky look with a separate link at the top of the board.

And, for all the hounds who are away for this one, we are already talking about possibly doing one in August, but not at Porta.

    2. Darn it, I live one block away but we will be away that weekend. You guys enjoy

      1. I will be away as well, would have been nice to put some faces to the more prolific names.

"excellent" review in the NYT today, btw

        1. Will there be any email response to those who reply including a listing of folks who will be attending?

I figure next weekend I should have a better idea of how many of us there will be, so maybe next Sunday.

But I did get all the emails so if you replied, rest assured you are counted and, of course, all are welcome.

          2. I wish I could make it!! We have a birthday party to go to. I love Porta, and I love my fellow hounds :)

            Next time for sure!!!

            1. So far for next Saturday's get together I've heard from a bunch of local hounds. Looking forward to meeting some new friends and seeing some old friends. Just look for the bald guy with the pretty wife.

Has an email regarding this gathering gone out? Just curious. Hoping the parking situation near Porta is not too ugly tomorrow...

                1. re: equal_Mark

                  Sent them.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Also - the more the merrier, so come one and all even if you didn't reply.

              2. Was a perfect day down at the shore...

                1. Totally forgot about it as I did email. Didn't sleep well last nite; went to the beach and got off about 11:40 in nearby Deal. Things haven't been the same of late - lost my Golden, Cal to cancer and had to put him down last week.

                  Rain check?

                  1. I really wanted to come but alas, had to work. I hope you (or any other participants) will be providing a post-Porta update.

                    1. The good, the bad and the ugly.

                      In reverse order...\

The ugly - =Mark and I were the only two guys there and neither of us would win any beauty contests. I'm amazed the two women there were able to keep their food down ;o)

The bad - Despite receiving seven affirmatives and six maybes, only four hounds showed up. To be fair, it was a nice, beachy kind of day and we did call it for 11:30, but still.

The good - It's Porta. The pizza, octopus, salad, and dessert were enjoyed by all - no surprise. Curlz is a pleasure to talk to and very up on her food from all over the world. It turned out we had both fallen in love with the same hard-to-find gelato joint near the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Also, Coldbeer, with his namesake in hand, showed up as we were finishing up to say hello. It was very nice all around.

The next chowdown is coming up soon. =M and I were discussing the possibility of an Ethiopian feast at Ada's Latin Flavor in Long Branch, so keep those long, floppy, hound ears open as Ada can cook!

Sorry I missed it but I knew this weekend was a difficult one for me. Glad those attended enjoyed! My biggest surprise, Curlz is a Girlz!?!? Who woulda thunk it!

                        1. re: jrvedivici

Curlz is about as girlzy as they getz. ;-)

                          1. re: Curlz

Too funny! Not sure how or why I had the impression that you were not a female. Sorry for that, lol.

                        2. re: seal

Sadly we were in Massachusetts otherwise the wife an I would have walked the block to Porta. Might have to swing by there for some octopus Saturday before heading back to Hoboken

                        3. There were girls and I missed it? Damn it!!

Sorry guys, really wanted to go but I had prior plans..next one for sure!

Shhh...nobody mention the dancing on the tables, okay?!?

                          2. One last quick note. I got a few emails from hounds who said they showed up and couldn't find us so maybe I am not the best host for these things. I guess I was too busy enjoying myself.

Still, =M did make a CH sign for our table and I did not wear a hat to disguise my bald head, but I will let somebody else take care of the next chowdown.

                            Apologies to anyone we missed.

We were the first table directly behind the hostess station and had a sign with a big "CH" on it. Also, the hostess and manager had been told that we were there with members of an online food group. I honestly don't know what more could have been done other than scope the place out ahead of time and arrange for a specific table. This is hard to do though given that when the Mgr and hostess were trying to seat me when I first got there and asked how many we would be I sort of shrugged and said "3 to 15?"...
