Puerto Rican rum rec

I have been really into tiki drinks lately and a number of recipes call for "Puerto Rican gold" rum. Assume they mean Bacardi but looking for a more interesting rec in the same style

  1. Most PR rums aren't that great.

    More full bodied, but I use El Dorado dark, to replace PR gold, and to replace PR light, El Dorado 3 yr white. Very, very good, and not expensive.

    You can also use the following golds:
    * Cruzan Gold great substitute
    * Flor de Caña Gold great substitute
    * Bacardi 8
    * Bacardi Anejo
    * Ron Barrelito

    and for white/silver/light:
    * Cruzan Light $13 substitute
    * Flor de Caña Extra Dry 4 Yr White Rum substitute
    * Mount Gay Eclipse Silver a bit rougher substitute

    1. before i went to PR 3 or 4 years ago, i posed a similar question, and Striper Guy recommended Ron De Barillito, which was great. I got it at the duty free shop, so it was a real bargain.
      I bought the 2 star for cocktails and the 3 for sipping, but really i liked the 2 star enough to use for sipping. It was too good to mask with some real fruity mixers.

        oops, looks like it is Barrilito, 2 r's 1l

      2. If it has to be Puerto Rico Rum, I would choose Don Q.

        1. I use Cruzan gold - which is one of the rums Jeff Berry recommends as a sub (tiki master) - easy to get and a good price - I find the PR gold is seldom called for in tiki drinks that i generally make

          I have also used Ron Barrelito 3 star (which is very good) but not really the most cost effective and it is also hard to find

          I have not used the 2 star so I am not sure how it compares to the 3 star
