Herschel's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour in Lebanon, Oregon
After some great swimming in Brownsville, OR on Saturday afternoon, we wanted some ice cream. Nobody was selling it in Brownsville (which seemed crazy to me coming from New England where I think every single town has ice cream in the summer), so we journeyed to Lebanon to check out Herschel's.
The atmosphere at Herschel's was good, with an old-fashioned soda-fountain feel. The assortment of ice cream flavors available was pretty weird though. They didn't have chocolate or coffee, but they did have licorice and bubble gum.
I ended up getting "Triple Chocolate" (the closest to plain chocolate that they had) in a waffle cone (they don't have sugar cones, only waffle or cake). A small was actually pretty large, making this a nice deal for $2.50 or $3 (can't remember for sure). Seemed like some of the ice cream was Blue Bunny, while other flavors were Umpqua. I think the one I had was Umpqua.
One of my friends had a chocolate malted, which was good but also sort of weird. They used soft-serve vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and malt syrup to make it, and it ended up being REALLY malty and not super chocolately. Fortunately, he really liked this and the texture of the shake was great. Big serving, and they gave him the leftovers in the metal cup. But perhaps, given the lack of chocolate ice cream, a vanilla malted would be the way to go here.
