For Q I would eat at Williams Smokehouse on Wheatly on the north side of town. Go north on Ella off loop 610 north and eventually Ella turns into Wheatley. The ribs are succulent and the sausage and briskett are very good.
For Mex I would point you to either Pico's, Otilla's, El Tiempo, or Lopez. It really depends on what kind of Mex you want.

The best bbq joint in the city is Williams for both ribs and brisket.

Second to that would be Dozier's in Fulshear (west on I-10 to Brookshire, south on 359 about 7 miles) for pecan smoked ribs and brisket or Leon's in Galveston (55th at Broadway) for melt-in-your mouth brisket and 'young and tender' ribs.

The Houston Press has just named Thelma's best cue in the city for the 2nd year in a row but you'll get widely varying opinions; I've never had great brisket there.

I ate so much 'Mexican,' i.e., Tex-Mex, growing up I hardly ever touch the stuff anymore, but I've had some good food at Pico's. I especially remember the conchinita pibil - shredded roast barbecued suckling pig.

Another take on bbq - Lyndon's on US 290 at Hollister for Carolina style pulled pork sandwiches with great sides. They even have a Carolina style sauce available, but you have to ask for it, the sauce on the warming trays on the condiments table is more Texas style.

I live south of Houston. Do Texas joints that serve N.C. pulled pork put cole slaw on their sandwiches?

Is that what's called Memphis style?, or is that common thruout the south?

Memphis Barbecue was a place on 1093 (Westheimer Rd.) about half way between 6 and 99 that served pulled pork sandwiches 'Memphis style,' with slaw on the sandwich. Really good, but it closed several months ago. A worker told me the lady was homesick and wanted to go back to TN. She had a really out of the way location.

I don't know that Lyndon's serves it that way, but they do have slaw on the menu. I can't recall that I've ever had their slaw but their sides are all really good and it's something I've thought about trying since Memphis BBQ is gone, but haven't gotten around to yet.

For Q try Burns at 8307 De Preist, very good ribs. Also give Goode Co BBQ a try, some people here don't like Goode Co but they do a good job. Goode Co is at 5109 Kirby. For Mexican 100% Taquito at 3245 southwest freeway for good tortas, and taquitos which are small tacos, and corn in a cup. Otilia's at 7710 Long Point is excellent. Also Teotihuacan 4624 Irvington and another location at Airline and Main. If you want to try cabrito go to El Hidalguense 6917 Long Point just down the street from Otilia's, as an added bonus you get free tequila shots. I say stay away from Molinas and Lopez.

There's been some discussion on houston.eats lately that 100% Taquito on SW Fwy is closed, whether for remodeling or permanently nobody knows. Might want to give 'em a call before heading over that way. There's another location out on the west side, I think, also.

I had a really excellent chopped beef sandwich at Burns. Very good sweet sauce with bits of onion and pepper (bell?) in it, reminiscent of Otto's but better. Like Robb Walsh says, if you're going any farther than the tables out front before you eat it, get the sauce on the side or it becomes chopped-bbq-beef-sandwich soup. I couldn't wait to get back up there for the ribs and some sliced brisket but I was really disappointed when I did. Neither brisket nor ribs had any smoke flavor and neither were as tender as I expected for 'East Texas - Southern Black' style bbq and the sauce was very thin and watery. I don't get up that way very often, but I'll give 'em another try sometime.

I see the Press 'Best of' for this year has picked Molina's as best Tex-Mex; I haven't been to Molina's in probably 30 years.

Is Long Point the same street as Long Dr.? That's what I get when I put in 6917 Long Point on MapQuest. El Hidalguense definitely sounds like a place we need to try on our next visit to Houston. Also, what is the address for Otilla's? I couldn't find anything under that name on Google.

Don't know yet where we will be staying; usually we stay somewhere in the Galleria area. This will probably be around the first week in November. I have been planning to post an appeal nearer to that time to ask if you and/or some other Chowhounds would meet us to share dim sum or Lai Lai dumplings or something of the sort -- last time we came to town we were frustrated by our inability to try more things, being only two mortals of finite stomach capacity. Plus, my husband and I are halfway thinking of moving to Houston and need lots of inside information.

Our e-mail is mouswisard@cox.net -- If anyone would like to dine with us when we next visit, please write. I don't want to take up Board space with this.

I've noticed MapQuest - which they use on the b4-u-eat.com site - confuses a number of Houston streets: North Main and South Main, Long Drive and Long Point, and some others. Confuses even me and I've lived here more than 30 years.
