Places that offer an affordable steak

I crave steaks but I live in a tiny apartment and don't have a gas/charcoal grill. What are some places that offer a decent value steak? I heard Main and Burger de Ville were quite good. How do la Cabane and various other Portuguese joint compare?

Overpriced onglet and bavette over 20$ need not apply

  1. Marven's. With the sides, and considering their generous portions, the plate is enough for 2!

    1. Le Bifteque is by far the best steak deal in town. It isn't the greatest restaurant but a 16 oz rib steak for $19.95 or ny strip for $24 with the trimmings is hard to beat.

Shwartz's also has a rib steak of $17.95

The after 9 menu at Moishes for $25 is another good deal

"Isn't the greatest" is being polite.

the sides suck but the meat is a good quality for the price and they know how to actually cook a steak to temperature (at least on my last 3 visits). If my father likes it, being that he is so peculiar about steak, it must be alright!

It's grocery store steak quality is all it is. The first time a few months ago it was under cooked and more recently it was over cooked.

I follow the deals of the week at the Biftheque that appear on page 3 of the Gazette every Wednesday for the following Weds thru Tues time period.....they slash at least 1/3 off the regular menu price. This past month (every Nov is their anniversary month) and for four weeks they offered $9.95 deals for NY Sirloin, Ribs which included all their usual trimmings, of course.

This week the special is a rack of lamb (delicious) for $15.95 and it's $30 on the menu.

After 9 deal at Moishe's does not impress me. Very small portions.

Thanks for the heads up. Here's the specials page on their website:

Have you or anyone else been to Madison's near the Bell Centre? They have a 2-for-$22 deal on Sundays, although none of the items on that menu are steak.

            1. re: MISTER_C

Moishe's hasn't reduced prices for their After 9 deal overall. Just reduced prices in line with smaller portions.

          2. Burger de Ville has a 14oz Rib Eye AAA with side for 16.95$

they make a good steak and pretty good fries too

              1. re: causeimhungry

I'd MUCH rather eat there than at le Biftèque! I've only eaten there once, but their frites were very good. I see that they also have grilled vegetables...

And see that they also have branches quite far east (Anjou, on Jarry) and quite far west (Mtl-W, on Westminster) as well as their Mile-End location.

I concur that BDV has a great Rib Eye deal @$16.95 which comes with a nice Caesar salad or fries.

                  1. re: causeimhungry

I hear Burger de Ville is inexpensive and that does sound reasonable.

                    1. re: Shattered

by rib steak it means bone in right? Also I like how there's more sides included at the Main than at Burger de Ville.

                      1. re: Ghostquatre

Yep. They also have sirloin and liver steaks. Some of the best burgers in town, too, imo. Very good ribs, poutine, and of course smoked meat (a rare place that offers the latter two without completely fucking at least one of them up - and usually both). I've eaten pretty much everything on the menu, except lox or chicken. Outside Chinatown, it's probably my favourite sit-down cheap eats place.

                        1. re: Shattered

Slightly off-topic, but I have a question about The Main. We were there maybe a year ago and ate our fill while palavering with the entertaining older waitress. On the way out, a cook placed some bits of beef on a plate and said "give it a try - boiled beef".
It was delicious, tender, and with plenty depth of flavor. Couldn't wait to return to order this.
However, when I did order the boiled beef (about a week later), it was very different. Almost bland boiled blade roast-like.
Did I miss something? could've the sample been something other than their "boiled beef"?
                          Thanks for any thoughts.

Slightly on-topic, I wanted to recommend Casa Grecque, the small-chain restaurant for grilled rib steak. I haven't been in awhile, so checked their on-line menu. It lists for $23 (16oz). Not the bargain it once was, but not bad for a BYOB place...

                          1. re: porker

Can't help you on the boiled beef question, porker, I've never had that.

                      2. Best value for a truly good steak can be had at THE KEG. Baseball Sirloin @$25.95 is a great deal although you have to like your steaks medium rare to enjoy this one. Steak is so thick....like a filet mignon.....that it can't be more well done.

The baseball sirloin has received its praise here before but I found it tough and not very flavourful. At $25.95 for 12 oz, there are better steaks to be had.

                        2. moishe's after 9 deal can't be beat. the ribsteak is quite big and you get an appetizer.

                          1. Any good brasserie in Montreal and surroundings usually has a Rib or T bone steak on the menu and prices are reasonable.

                            1. I recently tried the steak frites at Burger etc. on Sherbrooke W near the highway and I was pretty pleased with my meal. Paid like 13.75$ tax incl. for a NY strip around 9-10oz. a portion of fries bigger than what you get with the Main's steak deal, and a drink. I had my steak cooked medium and it came with sauteed onions and mushrooms, which is a nicer touch IMO than excessive fresh/spice garlic like they do at the Main and Burger de Ville (although I haven't had the steak at BdV yet). The subtleness of the onions and mushrooms went well with the meat instead of overpowering it.
The fries which have always been good were a little too hard/dry/overcooked/hollow this time, but the cook was kind enough to make me another batch.
I'd have to say it's probably the best value for a decent quality steak in this city, The steak is smaller than what is offered at Burger de Ville and Main, but it's still very satisfying. Also I don't care much for sauerkraut, pickles, hotdogs and liver as sides for a steak. The strip might have had less flavor than the rib steak at the Main but I probably didn't notice since i made the mistake of eating most of my steak there with garlic before I started brushing it off my meat. Despite being a tougher cut, I think it was probably as tender as the rib steak at the Main.

                                1. Best affordable steak you'll get is buying it yourself, searing on the stove top and finishing in a hot oven. You don't need a grill to have a great steak. Charcoal grill would be great for the added smoke flavour, but most places us gas grills that do nothing that you can't do with a stove and a good cast iron pan.
