i'll be coming back to Houston again and was hoping for reccomendations for authentic cajun/creole food and for soul food for lunch or dinner, we will have a car

we've been to floyd's, ragin cajun, and world class sould food but are looking for other places to try, that are better than those

we really liked floyd's though - is floyd's considered the best cajun in Houston?

one other question i have is about El Hidalguense, do they only serve the bbq goat on weekends?

thanks for your help

Frenchy's, across the street from World Class Soul Food has the city's best fried chicken and great sides and desserts.

Original New Orleans Po-Boys on Main Street in Midtown, just south of downtown, has great oyster po-boys. Good breakfasts too.

There's a Creole place on Yellowstone, between SH 288 and Tierwester, called Curette's. I haven't tried it yet, but it's an option.

Brennan's is supposed to be good. I just don't the kind of money it takes to eat there...

Tony Mandola's Blue Oyster Bar on the Gulf Freeway just south of 610 is good, but not real cheap. It's been there forever, and the Mandola family is legendary in Houston. Mama Grace is there a lot of the time, watching the kitchen.

Other ideas would be to just drive around OST east of SH 288...maybe try going down Scott, Cullen or MLK south of 610...No problem down there during the day, but I'd watch yourself there at night.

The breakfast klub in the midtown area just south of downtown is supposed to be a good soulful place where you can get catfish and grits or chicken and waffles for breakfast.
This Is It sould food on W Gray is a pretty hapnin place, I think the food is just ok but the people watching especially sunday is great.

Don't forget Treebeard's for Louisiana food (Cajun). At least two locations downtown. Inexpensive. Cafeteria line, very freshly made food. Only open 11am to 2pm on weekdays, Mon-fri, last I checked.

Best dishes: Red beans and rice with sausage, jambalaya, gumbo. try a veggie plate with red beans and rice, greens with shrimp, and maques choux (sorry for the spelling but it tastes great).

Treabeards are in nice settings, like a downtown church, or another old building closer to the courthouse. The desserts are great, and if you're with someone who's dieting, the salads and fruit plates are fresh appearing.

For Creole, Brennan's does an excellent job. As noted, it's very expensive.

I heard Floyd's is great, haven't tried it yet. Also heard the previously mentioned Breakfast Klub was very good and hope to try that.

Just to add, Zydeco at the edge of downtown does a good job at lunchtime, although I prefer Treebeard's.

Pe-Te's is a Cajun place going on the way towards Galveston, near Ellington field. I don't recall the food being special, but on Saturday afternoon they have a Cajun band, and the atmosphere is supposed to be very fun and family-oriented. I think the owner is the one who hosts a weekly Cajun radio show.
