AYCE, off a menu.
I am looking forward to an early return.
I know very little about Japanese cooking, but I do know enough that every time I go to a purported Japanese place that is not Japanese owned I say that this is the last time for non Japanese owned places. (Minor exception over the years. A couple that were Korean owned, but the owners had lived in Japan for many years.) But AYCE is a spell which I can't resist forever. So I succumb and the cycle repeats.
But I found a really good place today that is Chinese owned! Not sorry at all!
I liked the tea, miso soup, grilled "pike mackeral" (saury?), hand rolls, sushi.
I didn't like the short rib teriyaki and tempura vegetables. The short rib may be my problem, I didn't understand it. I rescued the tempura vegetables by underdressing them and leaving their coats.
My dessert was ginger icecream. (A better grade from Maypole I think.) A happy ending.
The owners respect the ingredients when they source them and in their handling and preparation. They try to do a good job for the customer. They are not only the best AYCE quasi- Japanese place I have been in, but the only good one.
No MSG problem, but I could have gotten lucky in selecting.
A nice room as well.
Charles, what do you think?
See you there!
