Aloha Hawaii chowhounds,
I'm home visiting for the next week and want fresh lychee. Where is the best place to get some?

they had, but I haven't seen it at the Iwilei Costco in the several times I have gone since.

      2. I have seen them at Koolau Farmer's in Kailua and Kaneohe. They also have a nice selection of papaya, banana and other local produce. I think people forget that.

i think there's also a koolau farmers in kapalama in that same center with sugoi and young's fish market

          1. re: macsak

ya, it's by chuck e cheese/DMV/kalihi pet center off of Dillingham.

called Chinatown marketplace. it's open every day regular business hrs.

          2. re: manomin

Thanks, going to try Kailua location tomorrow.

            1. re: HNLgirl

Kailua only had bananas and an empty shelf for lychee, but got some at the Kailua farmers market!!! $5.50/lb.

          3. It's high season for lychee, so it kind of depends on how much you want to pay per lb. and if it matters to you whether the lychee is from the Big Island or Oahu. I've seen lychee at the Farmers Markets, at Foodland, at Don Quijote, at Koolau and in Chinatown. Chinatown has the best selection because it has the most vendors in one place, and the fruit is not prebagged as it is at some of the othe places so you can usually taste what you're going to buy.

yeah, this seems to be a really good year for lychee
              lots for sale
usually, everyone keeps it for themselves and friends/relatives

              1. re: honu2

I'm on Oahu. Going to ck Kailua farmers market today.

              2. Went to don Quixote this morning, nothing at the kaheka st. Location so I got dragon eyes/longan ~$5 a bag. I'm staying in Kailua for a few days so I'm going to try koolau market tomorrow. Otherwise, my cousin will get some from her source, but he only comes on Fridays.
                Mahalo everyone for the tips.

My friend took these from Don Q's last week:

Wow, $8/lb is pretty expensive. I think that's the highest price I have seen so far.

                  1. re: HNLgirl

we have a longan tree but no fruit at the moment.

                    I can't stand the stuff!

                  2. Wow, prices are really high in Hawaii? Usually when we go back to visit, Chinatown had them but they didn't seem local. It's the same kind we have here in LA coming from China. They are not bright red like local fruit but kind of greenish yellow. At our 99 Ranch Market today, it was on sale for $1.69 a pound.

                    1. my mom bought lychee from curtistown (big island) at costco yesterday

                          1. re: macsak

thanks, when I was at the iwilei costco on sunday they didn't have any.

Boo hoo! My husband got a bag from the farmer's market for free! Didn't sell and they didn't want to take it back!

                              1. re: manomin

If these were the lychee being sold at the farmers' market in Windward Mall after 4 p.m. yesterday, I am glad he got them for free. My own thought as I passed by them yesterday, was that only a fool would pay the price they were asking for the less than prime fruit.

No it was KCC on Saturday, absolutely gorgeous and yummy. He often scores like that since he's been going forever and knows everyone.

Unfortunately I checked out the Iwilei Costco and there was no lychee when I went on the 12th.

                          2. As of 2 p.m. today, Costco in Iwilei had the 2.5 lb bags of lychee for sale. However, the bags were going fast.

I guess luck just isn't with me. I don't have the time to make it down any time soon. I guess i'll have to make do with my mangoes, guava, & mountain apples for now.
