Can the "recommend" function create a subscription?

There are a number of threads I would like to follow but in order to subscribe to them I have to comment. Is there a way to link that to "recommend"? Seems weird that I have to post "subbing" just to follow.

Specifically I thinking about threads that have to with a restaurant I am wanting to try or a town I plan on visiting. While I have nothing to add to the thread I would still would love to see when there are new posts.

Yes, minor in the scheme of things just something I have been thinking about.

You can hit the "save this discussion" yellow star to place any OP/thread in your personal profile folder of posts without every contributing to it. I do this all the time in order to save a CH recipe, thread, restaurant rec and comment that just really interested me.

in my experiences on Home Cooking Cheese, etc. "save the discussion" doesn't save without contributing to it

Saving the discussion should save it, but saving is a different thing from replying.

Your saved discussions appear in your profile under the Following section -- choose Discussions once you've clicked Following.

It won't subscribe you to update notifications about the discussion or put them on your main profile page, for those you do have to reply.

until there's a better alternative, I hit the yellow star so I don't lose the thread/OP the comment was placed in.

Keeping those threads in my following folder is better than nothing.

jpr, you don't have to contribute a comment to a thread in order to save a discussion. as Jacq stated there is a folder within your profile that holds all the discussions you wish to save.

A more robust set of options for saving and subscribing to notifications on threads is on our wishlist of features. No timelines for its arrival, but it is something we want to see happen.

While I don't know the timeline yet, we do want to build the following feature. It's something many users have been requesting for a while, and is very much on our radar.

          - If I participate in a discussion, but I decide later that I no longer want to "follow" it (and get notifications about it), I can un-follow it.

          - If there is a discussion that I have not participated in, but I want to follow it (and potentially get notifications about it), I could add it to my "following" list without participating.

In terms of how we go about doing this, that is still TBD, and it may or may not involve the recommend button.
