Anniversary Dinner, Portsmouth

Going to be in Portsmouth on Sunday the 7th and I'm looking for a romantic anniversary dinner. Quick search on the board turned up lots of recommendations but a lack of fine dining options. Seems like Surf and The Green Monkey get high marks but I also saw Four, The District, Cava, Massimo, Black Trumpet and Mediterrano.

We are Staying at the Hilton Garden downtown and walking distance would be nice but not a necessity. More interested the ambiance and good food.

We live in the Boston area and currently enjoy Bondair, Craigie, Rialto, Island Creek and our go to special place has been Sorellina so I’m open to any recommendations!

  1. of the list you have Cava would be my first choice...and I would recommend Brazzo as well. both walking distance from the hilton.
alot of folks enjoy the black trumpet but its never really done it for us.
    Happy anniversary!

    1. With little kids, we don't make it out to "nice" places very often, but I'd put in a pitch for Black Trumpet or Moxy. Both have a fresh ambiance - they don't feel like they're trying to be something (or somewhere) else. In particular, Black Trumpet seems to embrace it's unique Portsmouth location (and Moxy chef was up for a best young chef award in Food & Wine)

That sounds like a post I would have written. Last time I was in Portsmouth (from Boston), we started with a great drink and snack at Moxy then ate more 'real' food at Black Trumpet. The bartender at Moxy worked at Drink (at least he did a year ago) and the pork belly was great. That was my 2nd time at Black Trumpet and it was excellent. Two completely different atmospheres but both worth visiting.

      2. I've been to Surf in Nashua and although it is a fine place, it is a step down from Island Creek . The latter has a more imaginative menu.
