Rome - What would be a close second to Perilli?

Perilli will be closed in August and I'm struggling to find what would be a close second in Rome for pasta (especially for carbonara!!). It was one of the must-try places on our list, so we are super disappointed it won't be possible. :(

(Other places we have decided on so far for Rome are Trattoria Mario and Pizzeria Il leoncino.)

Armando al Pantheon makes a fine, traditional carbonara. Roscioli is also justly famous for their carbonara.

Thanks so much for your suggestions! :D Is Roscioli the "Salumeria Roscioli" located on Via dei Giubbonari, 21? For some reason, I am coming up with many Rosciolis in Rome when I try to find their contact online. :)

it is. the carbonara was outrageously good - my wife was making not-fit-for-public noises (think when harry met sally) and that was BEFORE she had even gotten to the super crispy bits of guanciale. we would have gone back again the next day just for more of it.

Rome lives and breathes pasta, and Perilli is only one of many competent trattorias, not the gold standard. You don't need a list of must-try places. There are plenty of fish in the sea and some of them probably haven't even decided their vacation dates yet.

That's great to know :) We will leave a few meals open to explore!

I think Flavio Velavevodetto is open in August. If you do go there, for dinner, make sure to reserve a table on the rooftop terrace. It's beautiful. But if you go for lunch, best to eat inside to avoid the heat.

Thanks for the advice Elizabeth - we're now trying to go there for dinner (on the terrace!) one evening. Will report back! :)
