Dinner in Cologne, Germany

I'm planning a surprise trip for my boyfriend and me to Köln in July and I'm looking for a good restaurant to take him to. He likes Italian and Thai, but any cuisine is fine. He also appreciates a good dessert. My only requirement is that it not be too expensive (under 100 euros for two people including drinks).

Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Quite an unusual rec from me - during my last visit to the Nordrhein-Westfalen region, my 3 Singaporean colleagues & I decided to try some "local" Chinese food, after 3 weeks of Westphalian cuisine in Bonn, Dusseldorf & Cologne. We were in Cologne & our hotel concierge recommended Tchang, the city's oldest Chinese restaurant, as it's centrally located and walking distance from where we were staying (the Hilton Cologne).

We went there, where the Taiwanese proprietress of the restaurant first spoke to us in German, then switched to Mandarin when she realised that we're Singaporeans hence more conversant in English & Mandarin. We ordered a seafood soup, stir-fried beef with ginger & scallions, sweet-sour pork, a Hakka-style braised tofu & vegetable dish and another dish which I couldn't remember now. Surprisingly (for us), the dishes all tasted very authentic although we did endure quite a wait.

Anyway, it's been there since 1954, so they must be doing something right.
