Salem (MA) area ice cream recommendation

Calpurnia76 Jun 25, 2013 07:57 AM

Last year for my birthday we went to Kimball Farms in Westford for a round of mini-golf and then indulgent ice cream sundaes.

This year I was thinking about going to the Faberge exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, and then going somewhere for decadent ice cream sundaes (there's a theme here).

Does anyone have recommendations for either an ice cream stand or ice cream parlor in the Salem area (not more than a 15-20 minute drive from Salem) that has great ice cream sundaes?

Boston Magazine just printed a list of ice cream stands worth driving to, including some on the North Shore:

Benson's in Boxford, some of the best native fruit ice cream and yogurt around. White Farm in Ipswich good traditional flavors.

For my money, Treadwell's is still some of the best ice cream in/near Salem. Homemade, fresh and huge servings. Just over the Salem line in Peabody.

Treadwell's is a tradition in my husbands family, it is where his grandparents took him after bowling.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. Treadwell's sounds like a winner. Now I just have to try and coordinate 8 schedules to find a date this summer to go. I'll use ice cream as a lure.

I am not sure if E.W. Hobbs has sundaes. So my vote goes to Treadwell's and it is pretty close to the Peabody Essex Museum. Be prepared for a line.
