Cheapest place to buy organic produce in LA?

  • 4

I am wondering where people have found the cheapest organic produce in Los Angeles? I eat a lot of fruit and it gets to be quite expensive. Which farmers markets are the cheapest or are there other places to go?

  1. When I was broke I'd hit up any farmers market just before closing, and go with singles and barter like I was in a foreign country. It worked because people didn't want to pack that stuff up and take it back. Also, it wasn't the best of the best produce, because it was picked over, but it was still organic and 100 times better than grocery store bought. Also, having the $1 bills is important, you don't want to go haggle like a hard-ass, then pull out a $20 bill.

Great tip. I fell upon this aspect of FMs by accident. I typically go early but went less than an hour before closing at the Mar Vista FM one Sunday. Just about every vendor I came in contact with wanted to swing deals.

Yes, I think that is the same way I made the discovery. Some are very willing! I remember that roast chicken place at the Sunday larchmont FM used to sell those chickens half off at closing. I'd say give me two then make an offer. I don't know if they still do that or if they are still at that FM, I moved. But, the point is you can find great deals.

I am in the same boat, and in addition to using the great tip you've already been given, I also do consistent comparison shopping at Trader Joe's, Fresh & Easy and Ralph's because sale prices at the latter 2 vary from week to week. Usually TJ's is the cheapest, but I've stumbled onto some great sales on organic produce at the other 2 from time to time.
