Do you put Ketchup on your Hot Dogs or Hamburgers?

For me No and No! the sweetness overpowers everything.

How about you?

  1. Yes for both for traditional American style burgers and dogs.

I like my hot dog with mayo, mustard, ketchup and a ton of chopped onion. No relish.

I like my hamburger with the same and pickle, tomato, lettuce. Cheeseburgers, bacon burgers, mushroom burgers, etc are different.

I find the sweetness balances out the rest of the savory and spice. I guess I don't use it so much that it overpowers anything.

    1. Not on hot dogs but on burgers. I love ketchup. It's in a food group of its own!!

      1. I've recently stopped. I used to use it on both but now on neither. I guess with age comes the finding that ketchup is now too sweet.

        1. No and no. Ketchup = the most overused condiment in the world imo (followed closely by mayo) and I have very little use for it. A bottle can last me more than a decade.

Many times I use ONLY mayo & ketchup on my dogs & burgers.

5 Guys order for my burger is mayo, ketchup, & jalapenos.

            1. re: brucesw

Well, for some reason, both ketchup and mayo (probably more the mayo) are semi-universally loved. They're big throughout much of the world! People seem to like them.

            2. Yes and yes..
Ketchup, mustard onions, relish(most of the time) on my dogs.
Ketchup, mustard, onions, pickles, hot peppers, lettuce(most of the time) on my burger.
It depends where I am and what condiments are offered...

              1. Hot dog - no, only mustard

Hamburger - occasionally. If it's a family type bbq and the hamburgers are pretty well done, then I'll use ketchup.

As a New Yorker, I've tried to get into the whole "never ketchup, only mustard thing" on hot dogs...but I cant. I rather give up hot dogs as the mustard ruins it for me. I can have ketchup and mustard but never just mustard. Maybe this will change as I get older as Davwud said.

                  1. re: VongolaDecimo

I've always been a big mustard fan - pretzles (soft or hard) dipped into mustard of any variety/quality has always been a snack I enjoyed. So hot dog with mustard only isn't such a big leap for me.

My biggest things with hot dogs is that I don't like them over whelmed with toppings. Mustard and occasionally some relish - and that's it. The chili dog does nothing for me.

                  1. Depends. Regular ol' hot dogs I use ketchup and mustard. If it's something special or a brat I usually just go with a spicy mustard instead. Diner or fast food burger I use ketchup and mustard. Absolutely hate mayo on a burger. If I'm making it at home depending on the toppings I usually go with a bbq sauce of some ilk. When I was in Tulsa there was a hole in the wall place downtown called the Coney Islander. Long-time tradition. They laughed at you if you asked for ketchup.

                    1. Always on hot dogs and never on burgers.

                      1. NEVER. Ketchup is one of the world's most vile concoctions - I don't use it on anything. I don't keep it in the house and if I run across a recipe that calls for it, I sub another tomato product. Foul brew.

                        1. Hamburgers - sometimes. Sometimes I do mustard too, or A-1 sauce, or gardinara - it depends on my mood.

                          Hot dogs? No way - never. 1. I'm a Chicago gal, 2. I'm over 10 years old.

A-1 ?? never was attracted to that stuff, I think it's the color.

                                1. re: treb

I could probably drink straight shots of the stuff....

Heh. No kidding. In fact, I probably have.

But I never put it on steak! Go figure.

                                    1. re: Perilagu Khan

Wow, how could I forget about A1. As a kid, I doused steaks with it but somehow forgot about it in the past decade or so. It would probably be great on a hotdog or hamburger.

                                      1. re: fldhkybnva

I love it on hamburgers. Not quite as sweet as ketchup.

                            1. Yes but not always.
I like hot dogs with ketchup mustard relish and siracha.
But I would never put ketchup on a slaw dog, chili dog or kraut dog.

Same with burgers-I like them with ketchup mustard onion pickles. But sometimes I like them with "special sauce" BBQ sauce or green chile "salsa."

Depends on what I am in the mood for.

                              1. neither. I hate ketchup.

                                1. Try a mix of mustard and ketchup. They balance and compliment each other.

I love that. When I make Pigs in a Blanket I make that sauce for dipping.

                                  2. Ketchup definitely belongs on every caseless, soy, veggie, turkey, or chicken dog that may be thrust upon me by some person that has my wellbeing in mind. Plus every other condiment I can find in hopes of some flavor combination that will be semi palatable.

mustard and piccilli below, ketchup, pickles, lettuce and mayo above. That is the start of a good burger. Even better if you add some hamburger.

                                    1. no to dogs and yes to burgers

Dog=Dill Relish, brown mustard, red onion

Burger= Cheddar Cheese, Tom, Let, Red Onion, ketchup, mayo. Pickle on the side

                                      1. Hell yes, to both! Always!

Mustard, relish, and EXTRA ketchup on both (with the burgers also topped mayo and pickles)

                                          1. Never ketchup on hot dogs. Tried it as a kid and couldn't stand it. It overwhelms them in sweetness. I like mustard and (sauerkraut if nothing else but preferably) that red onion sauce. I make it myself and use sweet onions, Huy Fong chili garlic paste (or Huy Fong sriracha, if paste not available), vinegar, a splash of water, a dash of sugar, oregano, and a LOT of ketchup. Reduce until thick and onions cooked.

But my burgers need tons of ketchup, (only Heinz, Simply Heinz preferred) and raw sweet onion. Cheddar if possible, American cheese crud if not. Soft cooked bacon if it's good quality and smoky.

Good fries need lot of Heinz as well, and liberally salted. One of the few foods I salt. Mc'd's fries, on the rare occasion I eat there, get only salt.

Heinz is the definition of ketchup. All the rest are wannabes.

                                              1. Absolutely not. That said, I've always liked the McDonald's Quarter-Pounder with Cheese.

                                                1. I don't eat a lot of hot dogs in recent years, but when I do I still enjoy them (especially those with snappy casings). Mustard (never ketchup) and sauerkraut on my hot dogs. The hotter the mustard the better, and the more sauerkraut the better.

Ketchup (never mustard) on my hamburgers most of the time. Sometimes no ketchup. Sometimes mayo instead of ketchup. Depends on my mood and on the hamburger. The better the burger the less likely I am to use ketchup or mayo.

Recently started to avoid using ketchup on my french fries, but occasionally still indulge if the fries are not up to par. (Par for me is when the fries are hot, crispy, slightly salty and entirely delicious.) Occasionally use mayo with my fries.

Still like mustard (again, the hotter the better) on soft pretzels when I have them, which isn't often.

                                                  1. Hot Dog - never.

                                                    Hamburger - sure.

                                                    1. NO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don't like or eat Ketchup and am allergic to mustard.

Hot Dog gets Kraut, Hamburger gets lettuce, onion and pickle

                                                      1. dogs no, burgers yes.

although... once in a while a hot dog with a kraft cheese slice and ketchup hits the spot.

                                                        1. Hotdogs, yes, chili dogs, no.

                                                          Hamburgers, no.

                                                          1. I love coleslaw on my dogs but if no coleslaw is avaiable then ketchup it is. Not a huge fan of mustard. For a traditional burger, I like the works....mustard, ketchup, relish, tomatoes bacon and lettuce! Mmmmmm getting hungry!

                                                            1. No!!!! and no. I like all sorts of mustards on both, though.

Confession: when I was a little kid, the only thing I would accept on a hot dog was a 50/50 mix of Hellman's and ketchup. Yes, it was pink. I know. I know. I also would dump ketchup on the canned asparagus my mother forced me to eat. It didn't help. I now can be found eating asparagus raw or barely cooked. So, no more ketchup.

                                                              1. I like the combination of ketchup and mustard on hot dogs and hamburgers. Only Heinz ketchup. And I like relish too.

                                                                1. I don't put ketchup on anything. I find it disgusting stuff.

The other day we were in a high-end grocery store and they were sampling some chicken sausages. I don't normally buy chicken sausages because most of them taste like a cheap hotdog, but these were really good. I found out just how good they were when I got to the check out, $6.50 for a package of four bun length sausages and I had two different kinds. We didn't put ketchup on them and we didn't even eat them with a bun.

                                                                    2. Sometimes for hot dogs, always for burgers. I tend to use ketchup on milder forms of hot dog.

                                                                        1. I only like ketchup with tater tots which I have maybe once every 3 years. I also occasionally use it as a base for a quick BBQ sauce.

Speaking of BBQ sauce, I love it on everything, except hot dogs. Hot dogs are mustard only.

I do like some homemade ketchups... I've had one at a bar in Portland that was a chipotle one that was actually pretty good, probably because it wasn't that sweet.

                                                                          1. Yes on a cheap supermarket or gas station dog.

No to an all beef natural casing dog.

Yes on a cookout-style burger, with mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle

No on a diner-style burger, with grilled onion, mustard, cheese and pickles.

                                                                            1. Ketchup is a single use condiment for poor to mediocre hamburgers. I remember once when I was very small and mom was out of town. dad served me a hot dog. wirh ketchup. I burst into tears.

                                                                              1. I really meant KRAUT for hot dogs and not coleslaw...oops! Can you tell I am new at this?

                                                                                1. I haven't had a hot dog since I was a kid. I put ketchup on them because I didn't like the taste. I no longer eat hamburgers either but when I did it was always with ketchup, lots of ketchup.

                                                                                  1. Sometime, but not all the time.

                                                                                    1. Yes to both. But it depends on what other toppings I am doing. Hot dogs are either chili and coleslaw or ketchup and relish. Hamburgers are usually lettuce, mayo, ketchup and pickles unless there are other toppings like mushrooms or pimento cheese.

                                                                                      1. I used to always put ketchup on hot dogs until I started reading blogs and the debate about that. I'm not a huge yellow mustard as I find it too tart. If I'm consuming mustard I prefer a spicy one. I've started experimenting eating hot dogs without ketchup now. Still like it on burgers.

                                                                                        1. Yes - and no.

When I go into Costco - pile it on! Katsup, deli mustard, onions, relish & kraut!. Sort of Chicago on the Hudson.

Otherwise - FEH! Deli Mustard & kraut.

Ask for ketchup at Katz's (have your running shoes on).

                                                                                          1. Hot dogs no. Hamburgers YES!

                                                                                            1. Yes to both. Ketchup and onions on both; sometimes cheese or pickles on a burger. No mustard, no relish, no mayo. For me, mustard goes on only ham or roast beef sandwiches. Relish and mayo never ever on anything.

                                                                                              1. no

                                                                                                hot dogs have mustard

                                                                                                1. No and No !

Mustard, spicy brown or Deli mustard, never yellow. One whole jar per hotdog. I do get looks, but that's how I eat my mustard.

And here in NY, just like algct writes below, "ask for ketchup at Katz's... Have your running shoes on." And you will never find mustard on a hamburger.

And no ketchup on fries either for me... Mayo or brown gravy...

                                                                                                    1. Both, also usually with yellow mustard, but I dip I don't top.

                                                                                                      2. Ketchup on hamburgers, mustard on hot dogs!!

                                                                                                        1. Though I'm not too big on ketchup in general, I do love it on hot dogs. For me, ketchup is the true match for a hot dog. I prefer mustard on other stuff. Best of all: chopped tomato, some ketchup and lots of avocado.

                                                                                                          1. Yes but a lot more mustard. Maybe it's to balance out the mustard because I put a LOT on it.

                                                                                                            1. My burgers get topped with Chipotle hot sauce or Chipotle hot sauce mixed with ketchup. Hot dogs get smothered with mustard and sauerkraut usually, but I will occasionally eat a hot dog with just ketchup on it and nothing else. My favorite way to use ketchup is on STEAK FRIES ... I always use Heinz.

Mustard goes with hot dogs and ketchup goes with hamburgers. Everyone in New York knew that back in my day. New York dogs with mustard, sauerkraut and those yummy sautéed tomatoey onions.ummmm

Although not in the U.S. Constitution, there is something about 'Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness' in The Declaration of Independence.

However in regard to some individuals, they tend to share a predictably provincial attitude, which has been encouraged by popular media throughout the past few decades (Sniff, ketchup is what those people eat...)

I have no problem with ketchup, just ketchup on hot dogs. Hot dogs are basicaly bologna, and the idea of ketchup on a bologna sandwich just doesnt fit. It's great on burgers and fries. Works well with horseradish to make hot sauce.

                                                                                                                      2. I know a lot of people don't like ketchup on hot dogs. I find it repulsive. I think it's both the taste and the look of it.
Hot dogs are sweet and incredibly salty, anyone(lol) should know that a condiment should really contrast what you're eating. besides hot dog rolls are generally sort of sweet and salty as well. to add more of the same, ketchup, plus tomato!!, is gross to me and I always remember it as such, even as a child.
Plus, it somehow looks vaguely perverted/sloppy...not sure exactly. Like a sexual organ on a newly born infant. Sorry this is not a PG site.

                                                                                                                        1. The perfect hotdog: natural casing, deep fried then burn the extra grease off on the grill. On a toasted bun with; chopped onions, brown mustard, hot relish, sweet relish, sauerkraut and hot peppers. Side of well done fries, and beverage of choice. For those of us lucky to be in CT that's a Roessler's or Hummell hot dog.

                                                                                                                          1. Neither. Haven't bought ketchup in some 10+ years. To me, it's just corn syrup with some added vinegar - essentially like adding sugar.

On my burgers, I'll add a touch of Russian dressing from time to time, but my preference is simply a grilled / roasted pepper. Fried onions or mushrooms can be an alternative.

If I want tomato flavoring, I'll have sliced (very fresh) tomato with lettuce & mayo.

                                                                                                                            1. Sometimes for the hot dog, all the time for burgers.
