Even before the original owners sold it, it had problems. I don't think we've eaten there for at least four years - and my last meal was terrible, mackerel cooked in rancid oil - one of the few times I've ever sent anything back to a restaurant kitchen. But even at that meal, the skordalia and taramasalata were nice, and I always loved their cheap house retsina.
It's sad to see another Astoria landmark gone - a pity, too, cause if the new owners had given a shit people would definitely have kept the place going. I hope it gets replaced by another restaurant, and not a bank or a phone store.
used to go after clubbing in Astoria back in the early 90's.
4 or 5 am a couple of us would get a patsa and a pikilia to 'sober' us up a bit for the ride home out to LI.
Made the 45 - 60 minute drive almost doable...
I might have wandered in at some point to try a lunch there later in the 90's, but from what I recall, it was a must avoid place.
The original, with Barba Yiorgi, well, those days were long gone even by that time.
I was in Astoria yesterday and was talking about Uncle George's, but drove by without noticing that it was closed. Ended up at Agnanti which is a few steps up in quality from what UG was. Agnanti had excellent leek pie, whole snapper was decent , but slightly overcooked, pastitsio had the right taste but the pasta was way over cooked.
